A part of Harrison County may see Oral Rabies Vaccine (ORV) baits between April 18 - May 13. These baits help protect wild animals like raccoons, skunks, foxes, and coyotes from rabies.

The vaccine is inside a small blister packet that smells sweet to animals. When the animal bites the bait, the packet breaks and the vaccine coats the mouth and throat. This gives the animal protection against rabies.

What you should know:
✅ The vaccine will not harm your pet. Eating too many baits may cause mild vomiting or diarrhea. Call your vet if this happens.
✅ Do not touch the baits unless needed. If one is in your yard, driveway, or another place where kids or pets may find it, you can move it.

Safety tips:
🔸 Wear gloves or use a paper towel to pick up the bait.
🔸 Toss whole (intact) baits into woods, fence rows, or ditches where raccoons live.
🔸 Wash your hands with soap and water if you touch a damaged bait.

Important:
🔺 These vaccines do not contain the live rabies virus. They use a gene of the virus that helps wild animals build protection (antibodies) against rabies.
🔺 If you think you or your pet had contact with a damaged bait, call your doctor or veterinarian.
