February is Low Vision and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) awareness month.
AMD is a progressive eye condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over 50. There are two main types: dry AMD, which involves gradual thinning of the macula, and wet AMD, which is caused by abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina and can lead to rapid vision loss. Risk factors include aging, smoking, genetics, and cardiovascular disease. While there is no cure, treatments such as lifestyle changes, nutritional supplements, and medications can help slow progression and preserve vision.
Cairo Eye Care is proud to provide MacuHealth supplements that can help prevent and slow progression of AMD. Ask Drs. McCaskill or Hartsell which MacuHealth is right for you!
