Happy Thanksgiving Break to all of our furry family members! We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday weekend. Here are a few tips to help make your turkey-day entirely pet-friendly, AND safe!🦃💛
Food safety:
- Avoid toxic foods: Keep onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, and artificial sweeteners with xylitol away from pets, as these are poisonous to them.
- Beware of dangerous ingredients: Foods like fatty drippings, gravy, and dark meat turkey can cause gastrointestinal upset or pancreatitis.
- Cooked bones are a hazard: Cooked poultry bones can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries.
- Secure your garbage: Tightly seal all trash containing bones, meat, and other food scraps to prevent pets from getting into it.
- Limit new foods: Don't feed your pet new or unusual foods, even if they seem safe, and inform guests not to share their plates.
Environmental safety:
- Watch decorations: Be mindful of potentially toxic plants, like lilies and certain ferns, and keep decorations such as tinsel, ribbons, and decorative gourds out of reach.
- Secure the house: Keep pets away from countertops and tables. Consider using baby gates to block off areas and ensure all pets have a quiet, safe space to retreat to.
Guest etiquette:
- Inform guests: Ask your guests to refrain from feeding your pet any human food.
- Provide alternatives: Have pet-friendly treats available for guests to hand out instead of table scraps.
- Manage pet stress: Extra guests and noise can be stressful for pets. Ensure they have a safe, quiet place to go to relax.
