Due to June being Men’s Mental Health Month, we feel like it’s important to address the stigma around men seeking therapy before the month of over.
So many factors play a key part in how a man shows and expresses his emotions, for example: societal norm, culture, how their dad raised them, lack of father role, movies/shows, etc.
It sets the tone that men need to hold it together for everyone else.
Men usually show their emotions through anger, because they were never taught how to sit with those uncomfortable emotions. It’s always, “Stop it! Be a man!” So, men are just supposed to put their emotions and thoughts on hold or box them up? Then wonder and are baffled why men explode.
Their emotions/thoughts are often dismissed and invalidated. People think they can handle those uncomfortable emotions, or aren’t struggling because they can hide them well.
Men seeking help isn’t unmanly. It’s the complete opposite.
