Some people follow the path everyone expects: law, finance, consulting, etc.
Some people do the riskiest thing possible: start a company from scratch.

Patrick Chung, Partner at Xfund, breaks down what separates the most successful founders from the rest:

Self-selection: They turn down “sure things” for something they love.

Persistence: They keep going, even when bankruptcy feels inevitable.

Zero to One Thinking: They create what’s never existed before, instead of tweaking what’s already here.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to build something truly new, this is your blueprint.

And if you’re ready to explore startups in real life, join us tomorrow:

Big career questions don’t get answered in isolation.

Tsion ’27, one of our Peer Advising Fellows, reflects on how MCS workshops and career fairs create space for students to explore interests, hear real stories, and make informed next steps.

These events aren’t about having it all figured out. They’re about getting closer.

If startups, innovation, or early-stage work are on your radar, this week is a great place to start.

Career fairs can feel intimidating, until you actually go to one.

Gavin, a former Peer Advising Fellow, shares why MCS career fairs were one of the most useful resources during his time at Harvard. From meeting alumni and employers to exploring roles across industries, these events help students turn interests into real opportunities.

Tomorrow is the Harvard Biotech, Pharma, & Healthcare Expo, and it’s a great chance to connect with organizations hiring for internships and full-time roles across research, health tech, medical devices, consulting, and more.

📅 Friday, January 30
⏰ 2:30–5:00pm ET
📍 SOCH, 59 Shepard St.

If you’re exploring what’s next, this is a room worth being in.

"The ordinary here at Harvard is extraordinary."

As we kick off a new semester (and shake off the snow from these past two days ❄️), we're taking it back to where it all begins: that wide-eyed wonder of discovering what makes our community truly special.

Alex and Bryan captured it perfectly. It's not just the famous faces or incredible opportunities (though yes, IShowSpeed AND the President of the Czech Republic in one week is pretty wild 😄).

It's the moment you realize the person sitting next to you has already started a nonprofit, conducted groundbreaking research, or is quietly changing their corner of the world. It's the daily reminder that we're all part of something bigger than ourselves: a community that challenges us, inspires us, and pushes us toward our highest potential.

At MCS, we're here to empower you to identify, explore, and achieve your career and professional goals, wherever they may lead. This community you're building? It's part of that journey. And on cold, snowy days like these, it's the warmth of this community that reminds us why we're here.

What's one "ordinary turned extraordinary" moment you've experienced at Harvard? Share below!

Here's something worth carrying with you this semester.

Tsion shares what she's learned over the years at Harvard. And honestly, it's advice we all need to hear.

"I think that a lot of the time people can sort of have a one-track set of mind, where they're focused on reaching certain goals, checking them off their to-do list and not really living or being present fully in the moment."

She's right. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle. The deadlines, the goals, the next thing on your list. But the connections you make in your entryway, at 2am in the library, in student organizations, with people who see the world differently than you do... that's what actually shapes your time here.

This semester, try something: show up for the people around you. Not because it'll look good on a resume. Not because you might get something out of it. But because genuine connection is what makes this whole experience worth it.

See you on campus soon.

✈️ Helping Harvard explore the world safely and confidently

Meet Krister Anderson, Associate Director for International Consulting and Projects with Harvard Global Support Services. His team helps students prepare for international travel, navigate visas, and get support in the event of an emergency abroad.

For Krister, the best part of the job is helping students access life-changing global experiences, just like the one that shaped his own path when he conducted thesis research in Morocco.

His advice to students is simple:
Stay curious, be open to unexpected opportunities, and trust the process. Sometimes the experience you never planned for becomes the one that changes everything.
