The holidays are just around the corner, and if you have a chronic illness and/or eating disorder, food may be something that is also on your mind.

If you know the food at the event is not going to be something that works for your body, I’d encourage you to bring something that you can enjoy yourself or, even better, bring a dish to share!

As National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week comes to a close, it’s important to keep naming what the research makes clear: many eating disorder behaviors are understandable responses to scarcity, not personal shortcomings.

Studies across adults and adolescents consistently show a connection between food insecurity and higher rates of binge eating, compensatory behaviors, and long-term struggles with food. When access to food has been unpredictable, eating past fullness, feeling preoccupied with food, or trying to stretch groceries by skipping meals are survival strategies - our bodies doing their best to manage uncertainty.

For anyone trying to recover while also worrying about groceries, rent, or medicine: you are not failing at recovery. You are navigating conditions that would overwhelm anyone, and treatment should reflect the realities you’re carrying.

Even though the awareness week is ending, the work continues. Keeping food insecurity and homelessness at the center of eating disorder conversations, year-round, matters. Supporting community-led efforts that connect food, housing, and mental health remains essential. No one should have to choose between having enough to eat and pursuing recovery.

When dealing with chronic illness, most of the focus tends to be on managing symptoms. But what about the emotional impact? The loss of independence, the struggle to do things you once loved, and the unpredictability of your health can all lead to feelings of grief.

Ignoring these emotions won’t make them go away. In fact, recognizing and working through them can help you build resilience and improve your overall well-being.

This article discusses the realities of chronic illness grief and offers guidance on how to process and cope.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, coinciding with National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week. It’s an important moment to recognize how access to food, housing, and safety shapes a person’s ability to heal - especially for transgender and gender-diverse people.

Research shows that food insecurity and eating disorders are closely connected. And for those who are transgender or gender non-conforming, the risk of food scarcity and houselessness is significantly higher. According to The Trevor Project, transgender and nonbinary young people have 73 percent greater odds of having been houseless compared to cisgender LGB peers.

Affirming care and structural protections matter. They’re not optional add-ons to treatment; they are essential conditions for recovery. As we uplift transgender lives today, we’re reminded that healing from an eating disorder cannot be separated from the realities of food access, safety, and belonging.

Our Story

Marci RD Nutrition: Food & Body Image Healers® helps clinicians and clients alike develop smart, enduring strategies for overcoming eating disorders, disordered eating, and the backlash of chronic dieting.

Our organization serves two groups of people – individuals looking to develop a healthier relationship to food and their bodies and clinicians seeking training on how to counsel individuals in recovery from eating disorders and disordered eating. However, a single working philosophy informs the work we do in both fields.

Marci developed her online training institute designed specifically to educate and empower dietitians to work in the field of eating disorders. She is proud of her online training institute and looks forward to building her library of training opportunities in the coming years. In addition to her online teaching, she is an internationally recognized and sought after speaker. She loves developing and giving talks and workshops to her fellow colleagues.
