There’s a surge of brilliance happening among adoptees right now—authors, essayists, and creators forming Zoom rooms, in-person circles, and retreats that give voice to our shared experience. It’s powerful. It’s needed.
And as we say, what’s shareable is bearable.
I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Anne Heffron, co-leading some of her extraordinary writing groups as the “house psychologist.”

Anne’s groups are unlike any others. Though she’s taught writing at the university level, what she offers now is something much deeper. These sessions invite you to dig inside, to create—with the spirit of Jackson Pollock—an honest, messy, freeing splash of emotion and memory. From that colorful chaos, you begin to recognize the shapes of what needs tending, healing, and care.
This kind of creative excavation is an act of self-kindness.
