Nursing has existed in some form since ancient times — whenever people cared for the sick or injured. However, modern nursing truly began in the 19th century.
• 🏺 Early roots: In ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome, care for the ill was often provided by family members, religious groups, or early healers.
• ⛪ Middle Ages: Religious orders, especially nuns and monks, cared for the sick in monasteries and hospitals. Nursing was seen as an act of charity and service to God.
• 👩‍⚕️ Florence Nightingale (1820–1910): Known as the founder of modern nursing, Nightingale transformed nursing into a respected profession. During the Crimean War (1853–1856), she organized care for wounded soldiers, improved hygiene, and reduced death rates dramatically.
• 🏫 Nursing education: After Nightingale established the first secular nursing school at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London in 1860, formal training for nurses spread worldwide.
• 🌍 20th century to today: Nursing evolved with advances in medicine, technology, and education. Nurses became essential healthcare professionals — not just caregivers but also leaders, educators, and researchers.
In short:
Nursing began as a form of compassionate care and grew into a professional, science-based field dedicated to healing and advocacy. đź’™
