Fascinating! The words “fascia” and “fascism” originate from the Latin word fascis, which means leather straps, referring to an ancient Roman symbol of a bundle of sticks held together by leather straps and including an axe. The fascis symbolized political power, law, and jurisdiction. It was a physical totem carried around by ancient Romans. It limped into the modern world as an abstract symbol of collective action, which was notoriously revitalized by the Nationalist Fascist Party in Italy in 1921. Despite the negative associations, it is a mystery how the fascis survived into our modern day science of fascia. The fascis looks similar to a bundle of muscle cells wrapped in connective tissue. We call that a fascicle, wrapped in fascia–the example of fascia in the human body. Who knew?
