Last month, ALPHA’s Executive Director Mara Jones, Kershaw County Opioid Abatement Coalition Director, LeAnna Adams, and ALPHA Prevention Specialist Bethany Hardaway had the opportunity to speak at the Kershaw County Council meeting. During the presentation, LeAnna Adams shared critical information about “gas station drugs” — loosely regulated "legal" products that can have serious impacts on our community.

Tonight, Kershaw County Council voted on two ordinances that directly support ALPHA's efforts.

✅ The first ordinance prohibits the sale of kratom, kratom-adjacent products, and nitrous oxide products to anyone under 21 and puts up guardrails to youth access through creating display and labeling requirements.

✅ The second ordinance establishes new operational and separation requirements for retailers selling hemp-derived products. Including keeping products inaccessible to minors and creating distance requirements to keep these items distant from churches, schools, and other frequently visited public areas.

Thank you to Kershaw County Council and its Councilmembers who gave us an opportunity to speak and ensured that we were heard. We are so grateful for your time and attention to this matter, as well as the efforts you make every day to improve Kershaw County.

Another thank you to Lenah Allen of WIS News who kindly interviewed Kershaw County Opioid Abatement Coalition Director, LeAnna Adams on these products and ordinances today. If you didn't catch the segment tonight, no worries we will be sharing that tomorrow so you can get the highlights!

ALPHA is so grateful for the collaboration, support, and dedication of each community we serve. Thank you all, we couldn't do it without each and every one of you!
