When we improve how we work, we improve how our patients live.

That’s how Chiquila Barber approaches her role as Director of Primary Care at MUSC Health Orangeburg.

Nominated by Echo McAlhany, Executive Director of Ambulatory Services, Chiquila is known for bringing people together. When opportunities to improve surfaced, she didn’t point fingers. She gathered her teams, listened, set clear goals and made sure everyone understood how their work connects to patient care.

Because to her, quality isn’t about numbers. It’s about helping patients better manage chronic conditions, stay on top of preventive care and live healthier lives.

This Black History Month, we celebrate her leadership and the impact she’s making across our community.

As we wrap up American Heart Month and head into National Kidney Month, we’re honored to share Darcell’s story.

In the span of a year, she received a life-saving heart transplant and, months later, a kidney from her son. Two transplants. Two extraordinary acts of generosity.

One decision can save a life!

Meet Socks!

This lab mix loves fetching tennis balls and drinking from the garden hose. Her favorite snacks are carrots and Cheerios. But her greatest gift is her heart.

Socks is one of our pet therapy dogs at MUSC Health. She seems to sense when someone needs comfort most, offering calm, connection and a reason to smile during difficult days.

Pet therapy has been shown to lower stress, reduce anxiety, ease pain perception and even support blood pressure and heart rate. For patients and care teams alike, a visit from Socks can make a long day feel lighter.

We’re grateful for the comfort she brings to our halls.

"During his 24 years of service at MUSC, Jerome has consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, compassion, and clinical reliability in his role as a Patient Care Technician."

For 24 years, Jerome Perilla has shown what it means to put patients first.

As a Patient Care Technician, Jerome is known for his calm presence, sharp clinical instincts and unwavering compassion. Patients remember him by name. Teammates rely on him without hesitation.

Recently named the January BEE Award winner, Jerome was recognized not only for his professionalism and teamwork but for his vigilance during a critical moment. When he noticed something wasn’t right while taking routine vital signs, he trusted his instincts and escalated concerns. That quick action helped identify hypothermic sepsis and ensured the patient received urgent ICU care.

Jerome’s attentiveness and advocacy made a difference when it mattered most.

Congratulations, Jerome. Thank you for the care and excellence you bring to MUSC Health every day.

When someone comes to the Emergency Department with signs of a heart attack, time matters.

MUSC Health Florence Medical Center is now the first hospital in South Carolina to use Abbott’s portable i-STAT 1 instrument with a high-sensitivity troponin test, delivering lab-quality results in about 15 minutes, right at the bedside.

For patient Deshantell Canteen, the experience was easy and reassuring. "I thought it was going to be something that was going to hurt," she said. "But once it was quickly performed, it was very simple and easy."

Emergency physician Dr. Bradley Russell calls it a “once in a decade type of change,” helping teams act faster when every second counts.

This is what innovation looks like in the P*e Dee, advanced technology paired with compassionate care.

Three months ago, Ernesto received a second chance at breath.

The 71-year-old, originally from Peru, was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and referred to MUSC Health Transplant last year. He was added to the transplant waitlist on Oct. 6. Just weeks later, after a hospitalization for worsening shortness of breath, a donor lung became available.

On Oct. 19, Dr. Barry Gibney performed his transplant.

Recently, Ernesto rang the bell surrounded by his wife and members of his care team. Transplant Pulmonologist Dr. Derlis Fleitas, who cared for him from his first visit and served as Spanish interpreter during the celebration, was there for this meaningful, full-circle moment.

The celebration was also a time to honor Ernesto’s donor and their family. Through organ donation, one selfless decision gave Ernesto the gift of life.

After years of pain and limited mobility, Laken Crocker found relief through complex revision spine surgery at MUSC Health.

Her case of thoracic lordoscoliosis required a highly individualized approach. Spine surgeon and researcher Dr. Robert Ravinsky and the MUSC Ortho Spine Research Group used clinical data and national databases to evaluate risks, simulate surgical strategies and guide decision-making.

Crocker’s outcome highlights how research and patient care intersect at MUSC, where clinical questions drive investigation and data informs better outcomes.

Dorchester County leaders and MUSC Health representatives gathered today to celebrate a new chapter for care in St. George.

The new MUSC Health Primary Care facility on Sears Street will open March 2, bringing annual wellness visits, chronic disease management, vaccinations, mental health support, lab testing and telehealth to a community that has long needed greater access close to home.

The 6,000-square-foot space, transformed from a former women’s detention center into a modern health care hub, reflects a strong public-private partnership between Dorchester County, MUSC Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Care is expanding. Access is growing. And St. George families will soon have more support right where they live.

A new AI-powered tool developed at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center could help clinicians identify life-threatening transplant complications months before symptoms appear.

Led by Dr. Sophie Paczesny, researchers created BIOPREVENT, a machine learning model that combines immune biomarkers and clinical data to predict chronic graft-versus-host disease and transplant-related mortality.

By detecting risk earlier, the tool opens the door to more personalized monitoring and future intervention strategies in transplant care.

Hockey and heart health made the perfect Valentine’s Day match.

MUSC Health Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Iva Smolens dropped the puck to kick off Heart Night with the P*e Dee IceCats, helping raise awareness about heart disease in our community.

Our MUSC Health Florence team was also on site sharing heart health education and prevention tips with fans. Because protecting your heart starts long before you need a surgeon.

In January, MUSC Health partnered with the Culinary Institute of Charleston at Trident Technical College to pilot a new four-week culinary clinic led by Dr. Joshua Neal, MUSC Health and Wellness and Endocrinology physician.

Designed for patients taking GLP-1 medications, the physician-referred course focused on building practical cooking skills that support long-term health goals. Each week, participants learned side by side with a professional chef, registered dietitian and medical provider, gaining confidence, skills and strategies they can use at home.

We’re proud to pilot this innovative approach to care and look forward to growing the program in the future.
