Century Certificates to Be Awarded at Blue Hills Genealogical Society Meeting

The Blue Hills Genealogical Society will award three Century Certificates honoring Einum and Boortz ancestors Thursday, November 6, 2025, at 3:30 at the Barron Senior Center, 12 N. 3 rd St., Barron. Kathleen Arcand-Jacobson and Brenda Boortz will receive the awards and give presentations about the ancestors they are honoring. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Those interested in honoring an ancestor who lived in Barron County by 1871 or 100 years ago may apply for a certificate. Contact Certificate chair Linda Adams at 715-205-2860,
buzzy@chibardun.net for assistance with the application process. Application forms can be found at www.bhgsbc.org, certificates tab.

The Blue Hills Genealogical Society will pause meetings for winter break until February 5, 2026. To join the Society, go to www.bhgsbc.org join tab. The Society publishes a newsletter
quarterly, offers free lookups to members of information in their Resource Library and reduced fees for lookups to members for searching outside of the Resource Library. To donate items of

History of Barron News Shield Topic of Genealogy Society Meeting
What was happening in Barron 149 years ago? Barron News Shield editor Ryan Urban will present a program on the history of the Barron News Shield that started in 1876 carrying the news of what was happening in our area. Join the Blue Hills Genealogical Society October 2, 3:30 p.m. at the Barron Senior Center, 12 N. 3rd St., Barron to hear this interesting presentation. The meeting is free and open to the public.

In 1880, just 4 years after the Barron News Shield was founded, the population of Barron was 1,368. In 2022 the population of Barron was 3693. So what happened those 142 years while Barron grew by 2825 people? The News Shield tells the story of Barron through those 142 years. The Blue Hills Genealogical Society has copies of many years of the old News Shields in their Resource Library.

Did you grow up gardening with your parents, canning and preserving the produce for the winter months? The Blue Hills Genealogical will present a program on the history of gardening
and preserving in Barron County Thursday, September 4th at
6:30 p.m. at the Barron Senior Center, 12 N. 3rd St., Barron. The program is free and open to the public. Master gardener Carol Kettner will give this interesting program. Ms. Kettner manages the gardens and flowers at the Pioneer Village Museum and is knowledgeable in the history of gardening in our area.

The Blue Hills Genealogical Society maintains a Resource Library with items and information of a genealogical nature about Barron County and area. The Resource Library is free and open to

Museum Curators to Speak at Genealogy Society

What do the Pioneer Village Museum curators do? Come to the Aug. 7 meeting of the Blue Hills Genealogical Society to find out. The meeting will start at 6:30 P.m. at the Barron Senior Center, 12 N. 3rd St., Barron on Thursday, Aug. 7. Museum curators Charles Knapp and Carol Pierson will tell us exactly what they do at the museum as curators and why their jobs are so important. Find out what happens to the items people donate to the Museum for preservation and exhibition to the public. This program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Solving Genealogy Brick Walls Topic at Blue Hills Genealogical Society Meeting

The Blue Hills Genealogical Society invites the public to their free July 7 meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Barron Senior Center, 12 N. 3 rd St., Barron. The program is Beyond the Brick Wall: Strategies
for Pre-1850 U.S. Research. Professional genealogist Julia Anderson will present many tips for finding ancestors that lived before 1850. If you have hit a brick wall in finding ancestors that lived in that time period, following MS. Anderson’s tips may bring you the success you have been looking for. We ask you to note the time of this presentation is 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The Society will have a display at Pioneer Village Museum Heritage Days July 12-13 in the Town Hall. Stop by for interesting Barron County genealogy items. If you have questions on doing your family history, Society members will be glad to help you. If you would like to join the Society, you may do so at the Society booth. If you have items you would like to donate to the Society, you may bring them to the booth.

Pioneer and Century certificates may be applied for by going to www.bhgsbc.org, Certificates tab. Certificate chair Linda Adams is glad to help you with your application. Linda may be contacted at 715-205-2860.

Genealogy Society to Work at Chetek Cemetery

The Blue Hills Genealogical Society will work on transcribing the text and taking pictures of the tombstones at Lakeview Cemetery Thursday, June 5, 2:00 p.m. The cemetery is located at 24 5/8 St., Chetek. Those interested in helping with this project should bring pencils and cameras. Clipboards and paper will be furnished. The project will be cancelled in case of rain. The genealogy society is documenting all the cemeteries in the county for people to use in their family history research. Cemetery information may be found on their website at www.bhgsbc.org.
