Carrageenan. Stop consuming it NOW.
Carrageenan sounds innocent because it comes from red seaweed. Cute little ocean plant. But once the food industry processes it, it stops acting like seaweed and starts acting like a microscopic cheese grater on your gut lining.
Here is the part nobody tells you.
Carrageenan is used in labs to TRIGGER INFLAMMATION in animals ON PURPOSE. Researchers literally inject it into rat paws to create swelling so they can test anti inflammatory drugs. Let that sink in. The same ingredient used to create pain in lab animals is sitting in your almond milk and ice cream.
Independent studies show it destroys the mucosal lining of the gut, ramps up IL 8 and other inflammatory cytokines, and mimics endotoxin damage. Your body reacts like it is being attacked even when nothing is invading. That is why people get bloating, cramps, diarrhea, skin flare ups, joint pain, and weight gain after eating foods that contain it.
And the food industry’s favorite bedtime story about “food grade carrageenan is different” is marketing, not reality. Food grade can still degrade into the inflammatory form once it hits stomach acid. Your gut does not care about their label wording.
Here is where it hides in everyday life.
Nut milks like Almond Breeze and Silk. Coconut milk in cartons.
Oatly.
Boxed cashew milk.
Dairy creamers.
Starbucks creamers.
Vegan creamers.
Ice cream like Ben and Jerrys, Breyers, and almost all low calorie ice creams.
Deli meats like Oscar Mayer and Hillshire.
Cottage cheese and ricotta brands trying to look wholesome.
Protein shakes like Ensure, Boost, SlimFast, Premier Protein.
Vegan cheeses, vegan sour cream, vegan mayo, vegan yogurts.
Canned soups and chowders.
Pudding cups and cheap desserts.
Fast food ice creams and lattes.
Even organic brands like 365 coconut milk and SoDelicious.
If it is thick, creamy, or “dairy like,” there is a good chance carrageenan is the glue holding it together and wrecking your gut in the process.
Now for the good part. The clean swaps that do not destroy your terrain.
Milk alternatives:

If you remove carrageenan for thirty days you will see the difference in your digestion, inflammation, skin, and energy so fast it almost feels fake. But it is not magic. It is simply removing an ingredient designed to irritate tissue.
