Meet Allen Hockenberry, veteran and career preparation instructor at the Hiram G. Andrews Center and Commonwealth Technical Institute, where he enjoys teaching service learning to the next generation of PA workers.

Hockenberry has been serving his country and community for decades – starting with his military career in 1994 as a fuel and electrical systems repairer for the U.S. Army Reserve and as part of the 104th Aviation Battalion with the Pennsylvania National Guard. He continued his commitment to public service as a 9-1-1 dispatcher in Blair County, a firefighter/EMT at the Geistown Volunteer Fire Company, and currently serves as a 2nd Lieutenant for the PA Wing of the Civil Air Patrol.

Hockenberry also founded Heroes Helpers, a day of rest and relaxation for local service members at Outdoor Odyssey.

This week we’re excited to highlight some of our staff who have served our country.

Meet Nat Raney, section administrator, systems & audit oversight with OVR’s Bureau of Central Operations!

Raney served in the United States Air Force from 1991–2001, training as an Orthotic Technician at Wilford Hall Medical Center and supporting patients at bases in California, England, and Japan.
His commitment to service continues in his family.

“My wife and I are proud that our son is currently serving in the Navy at Yokosuka Naval Base. We’re excited to visit him over Christmas,” said Raney.

OVR partnered with Brown Reentry Consulting to provide on-site job coaching and Supported Employment services, helping with training and workplace integration. The employer also received on-the-job training (OJT) wage reimbursement – covering up to 90 days of wages to offset training time.

Happy Halloween!

Want to hear a spooky fact? Neurodiverse people are more likely to be unemployed than people with any other disability. Unemployment for neurodivergent adults runs at least as high as 30-40% which is 3 times the rate for people with disability, and 8 times the rate for people without disabilities.

We want to fight for equality and inclusion in the workplace for people with all disabilities, including those with Down Syndrome and other neurodivergent individuals.

Do you know of businesses that strive to hire neurodivergent individuals? Share them with us!
