The most common baseball injuries include mild soft tissue injuries, such as muscle pulls (strains). Always take time to warm up and stretch. Warm up with some easy calisthenics, such as jumping jacks. Continue with walking or running, such as running the bases. Gentle stretching, in particular your back, hamstrings, and shoulders, can be helpful. If you have an injury, request an appointment with SBOS.

Hand and wrist injuries contribute up to three quarters of rock climbing injuries, with tendon and ligament injuries, and other fractures among the most common types of injury. Rock climbing gyms provide an opportunity for novices to learn more about the sport under controlled circumstances. Injury risk is much lower in a climbing gym, due to the use of padded landing sites, crash pads, and well trained spotters or belay partners. These spotters or belay partners allow the climbers to practice difficult moves with appropriate backup. If you're suffering from an injury, contact our office today.

Overall, lacrosse is a moderate risk sport. However, more significant injuries can occur. Stay in shape year round. Prior to the lacrosse season, start a graduated program of plyometrics, neuromuscular training, conditioning, and strength training geared to lacrosse demands. Warm up properly by thoroughly stretching and gradually increasing the intensity of your workouts. Hydrate regularly and get plenty of rest. If you have an injury, see a sports medicine professional at South Bay Orthopedic and Sports Medicine for assessment.

The golf swing involves repetitive, high-velocity movement of the hips, knees, and ankles. All golfers, should have a specific routine of stretching/flexibility exercises they perform prior to starting each round. Along with their stretching/ flexibility exercises, they should always hit some golf balls before a game, starting with the wedge and gradually working their way up to the driver. You should never just grab the driver and go. Contact our office if you have any questions or concerns.

Foot numbness and tingling are common complaints, and shoes that are too tight or narrow are often the cause. In addition, foot numbness can be due to exertional compartment syndrome. This arises from increased pressure in the lower leg and resulting compression of nerves. The diagnosis is made by pressure measurements and is treated with surgical release. Contact our office today for any questions or concerns.

Running is a great form of exercise, but some injuries can occur. For example muscle pulls, growth plate stress injuries, tendonitis, groin pain, and buttock pain. Pushing through pain just makes the problem worse, which will keep you from running for a long time. Whenever there is a problem, contact our office immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Applying ice to an acute injury makes the blood vessels constrict and thus minimizes the swelling and pain. The sooner ice is applied on an acute injury, the more effective it can be. Heat treatments are usually reserved for chronic conditions, as heat tends to make the blood vessels bigger and help relax and loosen tissues, as well as stimulate blood flow to the area. If the condition persists, contact our office or request an appointment online.

The shoulder is the joint most commonly affected by swimming injuries or overuse. Shoulder injuries may include rotator cuff impingement — pressure on the rotator cuff from part of the shoulder blade or scapula as the arm is lifted. One way to prevent shoulder injuries is to lessen repetitive strokes that are causing the overuse injury. Speak with us today if you have any concerns about injuries or prevention strategies.
