Reports indicate that during the Trump administration’s widespread immigration enforcement campaign in Minneapolis and other areas of the country, students and school staff members have been detained on school property, while some districts report increases in student absenteeism out of fear of encountering federal agents. These impacts are a direct result of the administration’s decision last year to rescind the Department of Homeland Security’s policy to protect “sensitive locations,” such as schools, when conducting enforcement activities.
NASP calls upon President Trump and his administration to immediately reinstate the “Sensitive Locations” Policy to prevent further harm to children and youth in our communities.
Every child is entitled to a safe, supportive school and community that is free from discrimination, harassment, and violence.
