For decades, Lyme disease has been treated as if it were caused by a single bacteria and diagnosed with a limited set of tests. But the science is showing us something far more complex.

In this powerful Tick Boot Camp interview, we speak with Dr. Bobbi S. Pritt of Mayo Clinic—one of the world’s leading experts in tick-borne diseases and a scientist who has helped expand our understanding of the pathogens ticks carry.

Dr. Pritt personally led the discovery and description of two previously unknown human pathogens: Borrelia mayonii, a newly recognized cause of Lyme disease in the United States, and Ehrlichia muris eauclairensis, another tick-borne infection identified in the Upper Midwest. These discoveries changed the scientific understanding of tick-borne disease and revealed that ticks can transmit more pathogens than many people realize.

During our conversation, Dr. Pritt walks us through the science of Lyme diagnostics and why testing can be challenging—especially early in infection. She explains the differences between antibody testing and PCR testing, why timing matters, and how emerging technologies like metagenomic sequencing may soon allow scientists to detect multiple pathogens from a single sample.

We also explore how different tick species behave, how co-infections complicate diagnosis, and why researchers continue to discover new tick-borne pathogens as science advances and surveillance improves.

For anyone living with Lyme disease, struggling with unexplained symptoms, or trying to understand the rapidly evolving science of tick-borne illness, this episode offers rare insight from one of the researchers helping shape the future of diagnostics and discovery.

Why do Lyme disease tests sometimes come back negative, even when people are clearly sick?

In this episode of the Tick Boot Camp
podcast, microbiologist Bobbi S. Pritt from the Mayo Clinic explains how Lyme and other tick-borne diseases are actually detected in the lab.

She talks through antibody testing, PCR, tissue analysis, and newer molecular methods, and why co-infections and timing of the immune response can make diagnosis complicated.

Dr Pritt also discusses how her lab discovered new tick-borne pathogens in the U.S. Midwest, the role of different tick species in disease transmission, and how environmental changes may be influencing the spread of ticks and the infections they carry.

This conversation helps explain why so many people in Lyme communities have had confusing or conflicting test results.

he studies linking Lyme to brain infections such as Dementia and Alzheimer's are increasing consistently. There are active studies going on right now, that show a connection, including during autopsies, where Lyme is found in the brain of patients diagnosed with Dementia or Alzheimer's.

These studies are verifying the depths that Lyme can travel and the harm that it can cause.

If you believe that you have undiagnosed Lyme, or even if you have been diagnosed, but not getting any help, do not stop advocating for yourself. Your future self will thank you.

We offer a ton of free resources on our website, including a blog about the Lyme-Alzheimer's connection, a letter to take to your doctor, symptoms checklist and so much more. You are not in this alone.

LYME NINJA: Project Lyme is proud to sponsor 18-year-old Talan Yorn, aka the Lyme Ninja, who is no stranger to falling down and picking himself back up again. Talan was bedridden with Lyme disease, PANS, and mold illness when he was only 10 years old. He has fought hard to overcome his illness, and while he still has to deal with the occasional flare-up, he has gotten his symptoms under control enough to pursue his athletic dreams.

In his recent YouTube video, Talan shares his experiences from the five Ninja Sport Championship Qualifying runs he completed across four different locations. Watch it now to see his main takeaways and learn some life-saving facts about Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses along the way: https://youtu.be/jqrgDuywh-s?si=GYECIgdNpKaj7MAs
