The CDC whispered the quiet part out loud yesterday. This is long but bear with me here!
They released information on their website that basically redacts their prior statements that vaccines do not cause autism. They state that we still have an insufficient amount of information to either accept or reject a causal relationship between vaccines and autism.
One may think that we as scientists always want our hypotheses to be proven right. Well, of course we do. Who doesn’t love being right and having data to back that up? But guess what? Even a result that is “insufficient”, or “null” tells us something.
A null result in scientific data means that an experiment or analysis did not show the effect, relationship, or difference that the hypothesis predicted. In simpler terms: you didn’t find what you were looking for.
So what does this mean for moving science forward? We are now able to focus efforts elsewhere to looking at other variables and controls.
Integrity must always be at the forefront of our data collection.
The question now goes back to you:
How do we as researchers restore trust in the scientific process in our communities?
Companies like us at Integrity First Clinical Trials aren’t owned, bought, pressured, or influenced by venture capitalists, investors, or external stakeholders. I don’t have a C-Suite executive jumping down my throat every 24 hours about profit & loss numbers. We run completely independently to bring research to our community. This is exactly how I envisioned it when founding Integrity First.
Science doesn’t care about feelings and is unimpressionable. Most days I show up to work in scrubs and a sweatshirt. A fancy suit isn’t going to change the data. Showing up authentically FOR YOU is what makes us different. Showing you through my actions and passion that I’m just a small town girl who loves science and dreams big of how I can leave an impact on this Earth.
