April 29th is National Fentanyl Awareness Day—a reminder of how much the landscape of substance use has changed.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is extremely potent and often mixed into other substances without a person’s knowledge, significantly increasing the risk of overdose.

In recent years, synthetic opioids like fentanyl have been involved in the majority of overdose deaths nationwide.
This is why awareness, education, and access to resources are critical.

Recognizing the signs of overdose and knowing how to respond—including the use of naloxone (Narcan)—can save lives.
If you or someone you love is struggling, help is available.

To understand why diabetes and alcoholism often go hand-in-hand in Ohio, it helps to start with the basics: both conditions affect how the body manages and uses sugar, known as glucose metabolism. Chronic drinking can disrupt this delicate balance, increasing risk for serious health problems such as insulin resistance and low blood sugar.

According to national research, heavy alcohol use raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 40%—and these risks hit especially hard in Ohio, where metabolic disorders and substance use are both more common than the national average. Here in Ohio, individuals from lower-income and rural communities are most likely to face these overlapping challenges, leading to increased rates of hospital visits for complications related to both conditions.

When diabetes and alcohol use disorder are present together, each condition worsens the other, demanding tailored care that addresses both blood sugar control and safe recovery. As we get into the nitty-gritty of glucose metabolism and Ohio-specific health risks, readers can use upcoming sections to pinpoint their needs and create a practical plan for recovery.

Are you at risk for comorbidity?

Ask yourself: Do you drink alcohol most days of the week? Has anyone in your family been diagnosed with diabetes? Do you notice unstable blood sugar?

Knowing how alcohol addiction and diabetes risks overlap is key for Ohioans concerned about their health. Research shows alcohol has a complicated impact on diabetes development: light-to-moderate drinking (usually no more than 1-2 drinks per day) may offer some protection against type 2 diabetes, but risk increases steeply with heavier drinking or binge patterns.

Problems with blood sugar regulation and insulin resistance can develop quickly when drinking is excessive, especially for those already diagnosed with diabetes or living in areas like Northeast Ohio where healthcare access can vary.

As you read on, you’ll discover the precise patterns and biological links that put individuals at higher risk—and what you can do about it: https://www.arrowpassage.com/alcohol-addiction-and-diabetes-risks/

Motivation comes and goes. That’s normal.
The challenge is that many people rely on motivation alone to make lasting change. But stress, emotions, and daily life can quickly disrupt it.

What actually supports long-term recovery is structure.
Consistent routines, accountability, and support systems create stability—even on the days when motivation isn’t there.

At Arrow Passage Recovery, we focus on building that foundation so individuals can continue moving forward, regardless of how they feel in the moment. Because life doesn't stop for recovery.

Movement plays a bigger role in recovery than most people realize.

Addiction often impacts both mental and physical health at the same time. Stress levels rise, mood becomes harder to regulate, and daily routines break down.

Incorporating movement, even in small ways, can help rebuild that foundation. It supports emotional stability, improves overall well-being, and creates structure that recovery can build on. 🚲🥏🏸

At Arrow Passage Recovery, we look at the full picture—because lasting change doesn’t come from focusing on just one part of your health.

Certain groups in Northeast Ohio face a heavier burden from PTSD, shaped by both local hardship and their roles in the community. Cleveland’s veterans—especially those living in neighborhoods like Old Brooklyn, Detroit-Shoreway, and Kamm’s Corners—are among the most affected. The su***de rate among Ohio veterans rose by 49% between 2010 and 2019, reaching 44.7 deaths per 100,000, a stark reminder of the trauma this group continues to endure.

First responders, including those based in Downtown, Collinwood, and Mount Pleasant, also experience PTSD at rates six times higher than the general population, with about one in three developing symptoms due to repeated exposure to crisis and violence8. Substance use and trauma often overlap in Cleveland, especially in Clark-Fulton and Union-Miles, where 63% of veterans with a substance use disorder also meet criteria for PTSD.

Young people in neighborhoods like Glenville and St. Clair–Superior are exposed to community violence and family disruption, putting them at high risk for trauma-related symptoms. Residents who’ve experienced housing instability, loss, or serious accidents—common in areas near major corridors like I-90 and Lorain Avenue—also make up a significant portion of those in need of PTSD treatment Cleveland.

These staggering statistics all lead to the same conclusion: PTSD treatment and recovery support in Ohio are more needed than ever.

Navigating insurance for rehab in Ohio can feel complex, but understanding the funding landscape is the first step toward securing care. Medicaid expansion has played a central role in shaping access to addiction care across the state.

Since the expansion, nearly 770,000 Ohioans have gained coverage, with the federal government contributing 90% of costs and the state covering the remainder.

This influx of federal funding has had a direct impact on availability. In 2024 alone, more than $1 billion in federal dollars supported behavioral health services for Ohioans in the expansion population. This funding covers essential services including:

-Outpatient counseling and therapy.
-Psychiatric care and medication management.
-Residential drug treatment programs.
