🔥 𝐇𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐅𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 🔥

If you’ve ever heard your veterinarian mention “fusing hocks,” you might assume it’s a bad thing but in many cases, it’s actually the goal.

The equine hock is made up of multiple joints, but the lower two joints (the distal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal joints) have very little motion. Because of this, they’re especially prone to arthritis, a common cause of hind-end lameness.

👉 𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 “𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠” 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧?
Over time, arthritis causes the cartilage in these joints to wear down. As the joint becomes more inflamed and unstable, the body responds by producing bone that eventually leads to the joint surfaces fusing together. That process can be slow and painful, often taking months to years if it happens naturally.

💉𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐭?
Early on, we focus on pain relief and slowing inflammation, most commonly with:
▪️ Joint injections (steroids + hyaluronic acid)
▪️ Anti-inflammatories and controlled exercise

If discomfort persists, we may recommend accelerating the fusion process through:
▪️ Chemical arthrodesis (injecting agents to break down cartilage)
▪️ Surgical arthrodesis (removing cartilage to allow bone to fuse)

✅ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠?
Once those lower hock joints are completely fused:
✔️ They are no longer painful
✔️ They no longer require repeated injections
✔️ Most horses return to comfortable work

And because these joints have minimal motion to begin with, fusion typically does NOT negatively affect gait or performance.

While the journey to fusion can be uncomfortable, the end result is often a sounder, more comfortable horse. If your horse is showing signs of hind-end stiffness or lameness, we’re here to help guide you through the best options for their long-term comfort and performance!
