The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new Clean Air in Buildings Challenge provides building owners and managers with guidelines and recommendations to help improve indoor air quality in their facilities.

However, according to Steve Ashkin, president of The Ashkin Group, the professional cleaning industry’s foremost advocate for Green Cleaning and sustainability, while the EPA says cleaner air can help prevent the spread of “infectious diseases like COVID-19,” it did not go far enough into why cleaner air is so important.

“For one thing, they forgot to mention that the World Health Organization estimates there are seven million deaths each year due to poor outdoor and indoor air,” says Ashkin.

To make up for this oversight, Ashkin offers building owners and managers the following “whys for clean indoor air.”

Maximize Profits

Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can cause people to feel unwell at work, negatively impacting their cognitive abilities and productivity. This decline in performance costs employers billions of dollars annually.
On the other hand, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health reports that improving IAQ increases worker productivity by $6,500 per employee, enhancing profits for businesses and organizations.

Improves Mood and Morale

Poor indoor air quality adversely impacts moods, morale, and motivation in school and work settings. This also lowers worker productivity and the ability of students to learn. All of these issues can be minimized or eliminated by enhanced IAQ.

Stops the Spread of Disease

The EPA acknowledges that improved IAQ could help prevent the spread of COVID. But there are other diseases associated with poor IAQ. These include the following:

• Allergies, headaches, and in schools, asthma

• Loss of coordination

• Nausea

• Damage to liver, kidneys, and the central nervous system

• Potential hazards to pregnant women

• Lung disease

• Cancer

Lengthens Life Spans

Four years after China declared war against air pollution in 2014, the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) estimated that if it continued, life spans in China would increase from 2.5 to as much as 5.3 years.

“Green Cleaning is the best way the professional cleaning industry can improve IAQ,” adds Ashkin. “Green Cleaning solutions contain low- or no-VOCs. Volatile Organic Compounds negatively impact IAQ.

Properly maintained, high-performance vacuum cleaners, dusting with microfiber and similar materials that capture dust, and installing impurity-catching soft entryway mats, have all helped our industry protect indoor air.”

What does the office look like in a post-pandemic world? It's a question that corporate leadership teams have grappled with over the past year, and even the most aggressive companies are still in a cautious, but optimistic, phase of gradual reentry. The methods of reentry vary, but often involve conducting surveys of employees, studying how existing facilities are utilized or modified, and observing other companies to see what they're doing next. Many of these efforts involve bringing in consultants for a fresh evaluation of all of the variables involved including culture, brand and design.

Different companies and industries have vastly different needs, but what we do know is that leadership teams are hesitant to invest a lot of capital on major renovations. A safer bet? Converting existing spaces into flexible or multi-purpose spaces that accommodate frequent or unexpected changes in behavior or policy. These spaces are adaptable with flexible furniture options and soft architecture that can be transformed in a matter of minutes.

In addition, the concept of “hoteling” is expected to return in this post-pandemic world, where team members share spaces versus having a dedicated desk or office. This is in line with a hybrid work-from-home model that many companies are choosing to make permanent, which jibes with the approximately 75 percent of the workforce that want flexibility in choosing their work environment. It allows those that do come in a few days a week to sit where they’d like based on what they are doing in the office that day, whether heads down work at a private desk or collaborative work in a meeting room.

When determining how to retrofit the existing office space, there are different spaces necessary based on what type of work teams are doing in the office. Consider the following renovations to enhance a post-pandemic office environment:

1. Project Rooms

The office should be considered a meeting place where teams can come together to collaborate. Instead of conference rooms with a large table and multiple chairs, consider incorporating project rooms. These rooms are designed for creativity with moveable furniture and whiteboard walls that allow for ideation and brainstorming more fluidly. They also allow a paced approach in completing a project when not all members of the team are present in the office every day.

2. Videocast Rooms

Zoom calls will still be around, particularly with a hybrid workforce. Consider rooms dedicated to these calls to mitigate disruptions to others at the office. In addition to outfitting rooms with full audio-visual capabilities, consider the acoustics and how to absorb the noise coming from these spaces. These rooms can also have clean or visually interesting backgrounds that showcase the culture of the company.

3. Private Spaces

Open concepts will remain integral to creating flexible office designs for those returning to work. However, many employees have either grown used to privacy or are seeking privacy as they transition away from complicated work-from-home situations. The type of privacy can be accomplished through both soft architecture and furniture solutions or the strategic “zoning” of workspaces — all made easier by the reduced daily attendance in a hybrid model. The bottom line is that today’s workforce wants the ability to choose what they need, how they’ll use it, when they want it.

4. “The Porch”

Because we worked from the couch, desk, kitchen table, bed, etc., many are used to moving around the house throughout the day and truly working from anywhere. Therefore, many employees will look for the same variety during their day at the office. The good news is that interesting seating and working arrangements come naturally with a flexible office model, and if a company sticks with that strategy, new “porches” can be created to prevent workspaces from becoming stale. With minimal effort and investment, modular design features can spark creativity and drive employee engagement during this sensitive period of reentry.

5. Outdoor Rooms

When large all-company meetings are required, this is the time to get creative with outdoor spaces available at the building. Can you host a meeting in the parking lot, on the front lawn or even on the sidewalk? These untapped outdoor spaces should be considered part of the “office” moving forward.

Considering the current supply chain issues, many materials and furniture pieces are significantly delayed and more costly. Therefore, when retrofitting office spaces, try to find pieces that can be multi-purpose to make up for the delays.

As you are determining what the office will look like, it is important to remember to focus on what the people need versus the company’s needs. The space should be purpose-built and centered on fueling the teams in whatever work they are planning on doing at the office. While it will look different, there is, indeed, a need for an office space and it is up to us to design it in a way that is built around the people who will spend time in it.

How to clean you windows like a professional
Posted on September 15, 2013 by cleaning service jade
By Debbie Eckdahl
Have you ever walked by a restaurant that had dirty grimy windows? What did that say to you about eating there? Clean windows can make your environment seem clean and more pleasant. It can cost you a $100 to have a cleaning service in Fort Myers come to your home to clean the windows. I know that is true in other areas of the country. After reading this I hope to inspire you to tackle this project on your own.
Lets start by asking yourself how often are you going to be cleaning windows and how many windows will you be doing. Here in Florida most people have more than one set of sliding glass doors. Usually these need to be cleaned each month. If you have a pool, dogs and children it can be much more often. Okay that having been said, you must assemble your window cleaning tools.
You’ll need a bucket, water, dish soap, maybe some Jet Dry, a clean dry, lint-free cloth (old t-shirts) a window ‘mop’ and a squeegee.
The last two will likely be purchased. They may come in a set, but if not, look for a window squeegee and applicator or window mop. It is something which is the same shape as a window squeegee but is covered with something like cotton terry cloth.
Unless you intend to use these only to clean picture windows or sliding glass doors, bigger is not always better. This is especially true for your squeegee. When it is too long as you put pressure on it and pull it down you want steady even pressure on the entire squeegee. When it is too long you don’t get pressure on the ends of the squeegee and consequently you will get streaks. Also, if they are longer than your window you won’t get contact with most of the pane of glass.
Also be sure to get the right kind of squeegee. If you go to the grocery store or Bed Bath and Beyond they sell squeegees that are made out of a hard plastic and the point on the squeegee is shaped like the point on a knife. They do not work for this kind of job !
Get a professional squeegee. It will be of a soft black rubber. The edge will look squared
Notice, it is squared off so it will have two edges. It will NOT come to a point as the point on a knife. Having two edges also makes it last twice as long. When the one side gets worn out you just take out the rubber and turn it around to the other side. I like one about 12 inches wide. You will find these at a DIY store like Lowes or Home Depot. Of course, there is always your local janitor supply store.
Believe it or not there are certain times to avoid cleaning your windows. Like if it is raining. Dahhhhh. Okay so you knew that. But did you know you should also avoid cleaning your windows if it is a very windy day. Especially here in Fort Myers Florida, professional cleaning companies avoid it when the summer sun is shining directly on the window. What happens is the sun makes the window so hot that the water evaporates immediately upon application leaving the solution that gets baked on to your window.
Fill your bucket halfway with cool water. If you can dip the window mop in, you’re fine. Now put 1-2 drops of dish soap and 1 tablespoon of Jet Dry in and mix it up. You don’t want bubbles. If you put in too much, you will create streaks and smears. Even if the windows you clean are dirty, don’t make the solution stronger because it will be difficult to get the residual soap off. If you are trying to clean particularly dirty windows, just change your water solution more often.
One key to shiny, clean windows is to not allow the solution to dry on the glass, so don’t soap up more windows than you can squeegee off. Now dip your window mop in the solution and mop the windows. If you have bad road grime or bird splatters this will not come off with one pass of the mop.
Next, place your squeegee squarely against the top of the pane and with even pressure, pull it downward. You can squeegee horizontally, too, but I find that vertical pulls are easier and less messy. Remove the squeegee and tap it against the wet part of the window to release the water. I find that if I take a cloth and run it across the squeegee that works the best. If you don’t dry off the squeegee you will find that on the next pass where you put your squeegee on the window and pull down, you will leave a little bit of water at the top of the window and that water will drip down on you cleaned window. So, DRY OFF the squeegee with each pass.
Return to the top of the window and overlap the squeegee by about an inch on the already clean surface, then angle the squeegee into the cleaned area and draw it downward to the bottom.
Using a dry portion of your cloth, wipe the outside perimeter of the window. On your last downward stroke place squeegee against left-hand molding. Tilt it slightly toward the molding and then pull down
If you happen to notice that you’ve missed a spot or left a streak, use another dry portion of your cloth to rub it, it should clean off without trouble. There you have it. Now, you are a pro!

Maintaining your Tile and Grout

Maintaining your Tile and Grout
From time to time I come across a company that is a specialist in their field who have
informative information to share. One such company is Grout Medic, a tile and grout restoration and cleaning business located in Denver, Colorado. As an office cleaning company in Fort Myers Florida we come across our share of dirty grout. The following article is useful information for those of us who HATE dirty grout.
Many people dread the fact of having to maintain their tile floors. It is something that can become somewhat of a chore, and basically a hassle. When you have tile flooring in your home, you take on the responsibility of keeping the tile and grout well maintained. There are some easy and simple ways to maintain your tile and grout to keep it looking clean and new. Here are some do it yourself tips and tricks on how to maintain your tile and grout.
So, what are some things that you can use to clean your tile and grout safely without ruining it? Well, there are quite a few things that you can use. You can clean grout with acidic cleaners, alkaline cleaners, and hydrogen peroxide cleaners.
• An acidic cleaner, clean the grout by etching into the grout, and slowly eats away at the top layer. So, this will limit the lifespan on your grout, but it will give it that very clean appearance.
• Alkaline cleaners are beach-based cleaners. You can use household bleach, but it is recommended to dilute the solution. The best ratio is 1 part bleach, and 10 parts water. Be sure to open your windows when cleaning with a bleach solution to prevent the fumes from overwhelming you.
• Hydrogen peroxide cleaner is a simple and effective cleaning solution for your grout and tile. It is ideal to create a solution with equal parts peroxide, water, and oxygen bleach. You apply the mixture to the tile and grout directly for 10 minutes and remove it with a soft nylon brush.
When you have a clean tiled floor, you can also make maintaining the floor easier by adding a seal over the grout, which is something that you can do all on your own. By adding a seal, you are giving yourself added protection, making it difficult for stains, germs, and mold growth to accumulate on the tiled floor. A seal will extend the life of your tiled floor with the benefits helping greatly to improve the tiled floor. You can also add color sealer to your floor, providing your grout with a lighter, darker, or a whole new color to enhance the look of the floor. A color seal has the same benefits of a regular sealer, but it adds a new color to the floor.
One other problem that may occur when having tile floors is cracked tile. If your tiled floor becomes cracked or broken in any way, you can benefit greatly from tile replacement, which yet again, is something that you can do on your own. The downfall to a cracked tiles is that it can cause mold to grow underneath, which could potentially force you to have a professional come and remove the mold. This can be costly, and you will have to remove all the tile to ensure there is no mold growth in other areas. By removing the broken tile and replacing it with brand new tile in a timely manner, your tiled floor will look spectacular, and you will have a like-new floor to show off to your guests.
There are many ways that you can maintain your tile and grout. By routinely cleaning and maintaining the tile and having a professional fix any major issues you might be having, you are going to have many years of that tiled surface, benefitting from the lower cost of simple repairs rather than paying expensive repairs for larger projects. In the end it is very easy to properly maintain and clean your tile all on your own.

Melt Brown Stains in your dirty sinks
Posted on August 16, 2013 by cleaningservicejade
Are you a housewife or a cleaning service with a dirty stained sink?

Melt That Stain away
We are a cleaning service in Fort Myers Florida, and we have our share of dirty sinks. I am often surprised how easy it is to clean and how few people know how to do it effortlessly. I find that most people put a powered cleanser like Comet or Ajax and scrub to their hearts content. NO!!!! Please don’t do that. Why? I’ll tell you why. Let us take Ajax cleanser for example. Ajax is made up of Calcium Carbonate, also known as monocalcium carbonate and from limestone. The limestone is heated and then mixed with water. Carbon dioxide is added and produces calcium carbonate, which is then dehydrated to form an abrasive powder. There are some other ingredients and cleaning agents like Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, sometimes called Sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate and Trichloro cyanuric acid (TCCA). These cleansers are very good for certain jobs, but in general not for cleaning sinks and bathtubs. It is like using sandpaper on your sinks and tubs. I find this especially bad for fiberglass. It scratches and removes the finish. For now, I am addressing dirty, brown sinks. Simply put about a tablespoon of bleach in a glass of water and pour it on the sink. Sometimes if the sink is really bad you use green scrubby. Personally, I just put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray it on and let it set for 3 or 4 minutes. Voilà. The brown melts away. If you really want a beautiful shine spray it with a stainless-steel spray and buff it in. Try using the cloth you used for the stainless steel to shine your chrome. You will LOVE the results.

A witness’ Magic Eraser!
Posted on August 4, 2013 by cleaningservicejade
There is a good product that is like a magic eraser. Really, it is. It’s named in the same way: Magic Eraser. Yesterday I Knew a housekeeper who didn’t liked it when she saw it advertised on TV. Then she but bought one and tried it. After working with the sponge, she thinks that is the best mop that she has used in 5 years before.
“The mop has the white magic cleaner attached to a regular blue sponge that picks up extra water” said the woman when she described me the product. (But, remember, there are a lot off kind of Magic Eraser’s colors in the stores too) Continue reading →

10 uses of WD-40 in professional cleaning services
Posted on July 28, 2013 by cleaningservicejade
One Sunday I got up very early and went out to get the paper and I saw someone had spray-painted my neighbor‘s truck. I woke him up to give him the bad news. So, he got upset and we decided to not do anything until the next day because all the shops were closed. But a neighbor appeared, who assessed the situation and said he was going to get his WD-40 to fix the problem. And guess what? WD-40 had cleaned the truck completely by itself without affecting the original painting.
This chemical that protects the Statue of Liberty for climatic factors, according to some websites, was created in 1953 by three technicians at the Rocket Chemical Company of San Diego. Its name comes from the research project a Water Displacement. They had tried the formula for the 40th time. That’s why it was named: WD-40. Continue reading →

Good Housekeeping magazine: one of the most popular in US
Posted on July 5, 2013 by cleaningservicejade
Do you know that one of the several popular women’s magazines founded in 1885 is about housekeeping? The magazine is called Good Housekeeping. It made the debut on May 2 of the same year of the late nineteenth century American. It provides information about running a home, a broad range of literary offerings, and opportunities for reader input.

Good Housekeeping magazine
Founded by journalist-entrepreneur Clark W. Bryan in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Good Housekeeping soon moved to Springfield. The magazine was purchased by the Hearst Publishing Company and moved to New York in 1911 with a circulation of 300 000. 120 years later, in 2006, the magazine had approximately 4.6 million paid subscribers.
Well-known writers who have contributed to the magazine include Somerset Maugham, Edwin Markham, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Frances Parkinson Keyes, and Evelyn Waugh. Following the death of Calvin Coolidge his widow, Grace Goodhue Coolidge, memorialized him in its pages. In an effort to stay close to its audience, many Good Housekeeping articles have been contributed by readers.
The magazine began testing and evaluating consumer goods and making recommendations to readers in 1900. This practice evolved when the magazine’s consumer product evaluation laboratory became the Good Housekeeping Research Institute. The Institute awards selected products whose advertisements have been reviewed and accepted for publication in Good Housekeeping its “Seal of Approval.”

BSC Offers 4 Tips To Reopening Facilities
Words reset, restart and reopening on the light box. New life, new business, new deals concept.
email sharing button LinkedIn sharing button Facebook sharing button twitter sharing button

The commercial cleaning company OpenWorks has been gathering information from various experts so that it can help its customers formulate a plan as businesses begin to reopen after closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

These plans will of course vary a bit as regulations differ from place to place. However, OpenWorks says all business reopening plans should include the following four elements:

1. Create a cross-functional team that will oversee ongoing reopening efforts.
It is essential to appoint leaders across all departments to oversee ongoing reopening efforts. Including at least one person from each team helps avoid conflicts and ensures everyone knows what is expected. The roles of this group should include monitoring local and state updates, developing a communication plan for employees and customers, and designating reopening tasks. The team should have regular check-ins to discuss progress and next steps.

2. Prepare facilities for re-opening by first understanding the needs of employees and customers.
Conducting a survey is a great way to understand employee and customer expectations for cleaning, social distancing and other safeguards. According to OSHA, employers should also implement engineering controls to isolate employees from workplace related hazards. In the case of COVID-19, measures include:

• Installing high-efficiency air filters.
• Increasing ventilation rates in the work environment.
• Installing physical barriers, such as clear plastic sneeze guards.
• Installing a drive-through window for customer service.
• Specialized negative pressure ventilation in some settings, such as for aerosol generating procedures (e.g., airborne infection isolation rooms in healthcare settings and specialized autopsy suites in mortuary settings).

This is also a good time to reevaluate cleaning and disinfection procedures. Review the CDC’s guidelines, and research any specific recommendations for the business type.

It’s also important to consider how to accommodate social distancing. Is there sufficient PPE, disinfectant, hand sanitizer, and other materials? Planning ahead will prevent any confusion or mishaps on reopening day.

3. Set policies and procedures that will dictate who will return to work and when.
Many companies are operating under a staged re-opening process with split shifts of remote and in-person work to prevent crowding. It's important also to communicate policies on travel, guests, and at-risk groups and caregivers.

In the event of a COVID-19 incident in the workplace, how will employees be expected to communicate? How will the office be evacuated and disinfected? Have a plan in place for what will be done and how long employees will remain out of the office following an incident. A qualified commercial cleaning company will be able to disinfect the space from top to bottom so employees can return safely.

4. Prepare customers by adding signage that makes them aware of safety requirements.
Customers will be excited to return to business as usual, and it’s important to help them do so safely. Continuously monitor local guidelines to maintain compliance. Communicate the steps being taken and consider adding signage to help customers understand expectations. Employees should also be aware of requirements and what to do if customers aren’t following them.
