MEET THE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE 🎓
Ruth brings a lifetime of dedication, resilience, and passion for education to the Gulf Coast Village Foundation Scholarship Committee. Originally from New Jersey, Ruth has been part of the Gulf Coast Village community for two years.
At 88 years old, Ruth reflects on a remarkable career rooted in both opportunity and purpose. She began her professional journey working as a representative for NJ Bell, at a time when women were often hired for their communication skills and ability to represent a company with confidence. Life soon shifted, and after the loss of employee benefits while raising two young children, Ruth answered a simple newspaper ad for a teaching position—planning to stay just one year. That decision turned into a 30-year career in education.
Ruth spent three decades as a middle school teacher, a role she grew to love deeply despite early doubts from others. She also served as President of the Teachers Association and as a Negotiations Chair for 25 years. She earned two master’s degrees along the way and remains proud of the impact she made in the classroom and beyond.
Throughout her career, Ruth embraced a philosophy centered on positivity and growth. She believes in lifting others up, learning something new every day, and recognizing that every person has something valuable to contribute.
Ruth has long been committed to supporting young people. She was instrumental in establishing scholarship efforts through Cape Coral for the Children and previously led its scholarship committee. Although a car accident three years ago limited her ability to continue in that role, her passion for helping students never wavered. When she learned of the opportunity to join the Gulf Coast Village Foundation Scholarship Committee, she was honored and excited to continue that mission.
One of Ruth’s favorite parts of the process is connecting with students—helping them feel at ease, especially those who are nervous, and truly listening to their stories. Having personally supported her own children through college and experienced the financial challenges that can come with education, she brings both empathy and real-world perspective to the committee.
When evaluating applicants, Ruth looks for commitment, responsibility, and a realistic plan for the future. She values students who understand the financial impact of their choices and approach their education with intention and determination.
Her advice to students balancing work and school is practical and thoughtful: plan ahead, stay organized, build positive relationships, and continue seeking financial support along the way.
Ruth believes deeply in the impact of scholarships—not only in helping reduce financial burden, but in making students feel seen, supported, and valued. She views education as essential to the strength of our communities and encourages others to give, knowing their contributions help shape the future.
Through her work on the committee, Ruth continues to inspire, uplift, and invest in the next generation—just as she has done throughout her entire life.
