On today’s Veteran’s Day, I ask that we all pause a moment to reflect and appreciate the selflessness and sacrifice millions of Americans have given in military service of our country. As a mental health professional, I’m also reminded of the very real struggles many of our veterans face emotionally and mentally after their service is over. A 2019 report from the VA cites that 17 veterans die of su***de every day. My heart continues to go out to these individuals and their friends and families.
I was very humbled this morning to be able to do a workout at BootHeel CrossFit created in honor of one such hero, Chad Wilkinson, an active-duty SEAL who committed su***de several years ago. You can read about Chad here: (https://morningchalkup.com/2018/12/20/the-story-of-the-dave-castros-viral-hero-wod-to-honor-his-friend/?fbclid=IwAR0zOqVKvfrCAdviY9goM3bMJSEbBSLrE4tzN7UAWtO8KHUSykh8oUZDbos) Attached in the comments are pictures of this workout. While I did not personally know Chad, I’ve been blessed to work with veterans and their families who are working daily to improve their overall mental health and live fulfilling, health-oriented lives. And I want to daily remind them: Your story is not over. We are all here to support you as a very small and humble repayment of what you’ve given for all of us.
So if you are a veteran or a loved one of a veteran, I want to remind you of the many resources available through the VA or your local health organizations. Please don’t feel you are alone. I have attached a few resources below:
