If you know of anyone affected by the spring storms from March 30-April 8, FEMA has approved Individual Assistance for recovery purposes in Cape Girardeau and Bollinger County. This is the time period the tornado caused significant damage in Delta, which is in Cape County. Please share this information if you know anyone who was affected.
FEMA Assistance Available for March 30 – April 8 Storms
A Declaration for Individual Assistance has been approved for the severe weather and
flooding that took place between March 30, 2025 and April 8,2025. If your family was
impacted by the weather events during this period you can apply for assistance through
FEMA.
Below are the steps you need to take to apply for FEMA Assistance.
You should first file an insurance claim
If you have homeowners, renters, or flood insurance, you should file a claim before applying for FEMA assistance. FEMA cannot duplicate benefits for losses covered by insurance. If your policy does not cover all your disaster expenses, you may be eligible for federal assistance.
Apply for FEMA assistance
FEMA may be able to help if you were displaced, had serious needs, needed temporary lodging, required basic home repair costs, lost personal property or had other uninsured disaster-caused needs.
FEMA grants do not have to be repaid. The grants can include money for temporary housing and home repairs, replacement of lost essential personal property and more to help individuals and self-employed business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.
The fastest way to apply is online or by phone:
▪ Online: www.disasterassistance.gov
▪ Phone: 800-621-3362 from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central.
▪ Download and use the FEMA App
▪ Anyone using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, can give FEMA the number for that service. For an accessible video on three ways to apply for FEMA assistance, visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU7wzRjByhI
FEMA works with each household on a case-by-case basis. When you apply for assistance, please have the following information readily available:
▪ A current phone number where you can be contacted
▪ Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying
▪ Your email address (required)
▪ Your Social Security number, if available
▪ A general list of damage and losses
▪ If insured, the policy number or the agent and/or the company name
▪ Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit of funds

We’re excited to announce that the winner of the 2025 Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) Staff Poster Contest is...
🏆 Haley Shuffit from the Support Staff Department in Cape!
Haley’s poster was selected for its creativity, cultural depth, and powerful message celebrating Hispanic heritage. Their work stood out as a shining example of how art can connect us, educate us, and celebrate the diversity of our community.
As part of the prize, Haley will enjoy a lunch with a coworker of her choosing provided by the C.L.U.E. Committee (Connection through Learning, Understanding, and Empathy). In addition, the winning poster will be proudly featured in the agency’s newsletter, Connection, and on our official social media platforms.
Once again, thank you to all who contributed their time and talent to this initiative. Your participation continues to make our workplace a more inclusive and connected space.

The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Community Counseling Center Foundation for their generous donation in support of the National Child Safety Council (NCSC).

Established in 1955, the NCSC is the only child-safety organization in the nation with a network of safety coordinators working directly with public safety agencies to promote safety education. These valuable materials are shared with children through community programs, events, and schools across Cape Girardeau County.

We’re deeply grateful for our community partners and their continued support in helping us educate and protect the youth of our county.
