March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month — a time to recognize the strengths, talents, and contributions of people with developmental disabilities, and to reaffirm our commitment to building communities where everyone belongs.
As a Center for Independent Living here in Missouri, we are proud to serve individuals with developmental disabilities across our communities. We believe that every person deserves the opportunity to live independently, make their own choices, and fully participate in community life.
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month began in 1987 when President Ronald Reagan called for greater public awareness and understanding of the barriers faced by people with developmental disabilities. Today, that call continues. While progress has been made, true inclusion means more than awareness — it means access, equity, respect, and opportunity.
At our Center for Independent Living, we:
Empower individuals to direct their own services and supports
Advocate for accessibility and equal rights
Provide resources, peer support, skills training, and information & referral
Work alongside individuals and families to remove barriers to independence
This month, we celebrate the leadership, resilience, and accomplishments of the individuals we serve. We also renew our commitment to advancing independent living principles throughout Missouri — ensuring that people with developmental disabilities have the same rights, responsibilities, and opportunities as everyone else.
We encourage our community partners, families, and neighbors to join us in:
Promoting inclusion in schools, workplaces, and public spaces
Listening to and elevating the voices of people with disabilities
Challenging stereotypes and stigma
Supporting policies that advance community-based living
Together, we can build stronger, more inclusive communities where independence is not just a goal — it is an expectation.
This March, and every month, we stand with individuals with developmental disabilities and celebrate the power of independence.
