Sleep is so essential to so many aspects of our overall health✨

Melatonin is a hormone produced in our pineal gland in our brains.

This hormonal is important for proper sleep and our sleep wake cycles in addition to our immune health.

Excess blue light or screen type time in evening hours can alter and negatively affect our melatonin production.

A great nutrient dense food that helps stimulate that melatonin we want is CHERRIES 🍒

Study done in Eur. Journal of Nutrition 2012 found:
“ consumption of tart cherry juice provides an increase in exogenous melatonin levels that is beneficial to improving sleep duration and quality”

Understanding the risk or other factors can be key to better treatment and also prevention of other complications.

There are also many lifestyle and dietary approaches that can help decrease symptoms and in SOME cases result in less need for medications.

It is also helpful to have a better understanding of what may actually be the root cause of the reflux symptoms and their connection.

Studies that are looking into nutrient deficiencies and changes in cognitive function/decline are some areas of question or concern from a health standpoint.

This study discusses some risks and that there is no standard of care for supplementation or screening of various nutrients that may be impacted. “PPIs have been associated with increased risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies impacting vitamin B12, vitamin C, calcium, iron, and magnesium metabolism.”

I know I don’t love ❤️ the strength stuff either BUT to keep our metabolism working well we have to build that muscle 💪🏽.

Muscle is metabolically active as a means to burn energy even when at rest- so often media talks about quick fixes or pills to “speed up metabolism” but those will often not lead to lasting health benefits and can even in some cause harm.

Nutritional components play a role in metabolism but also getting our bodies moving really is a key to success that shouldn’t be overlooked. Muscle actually can speed up that metabolic rate!!!!!

As we age and in post menopause there is muscle mass loss and sometimes struggles with weight gain - this can be better combated with building muscle mass and a more tailored dietary approach. Aiding in building muscle mass before menopause is also important.

Muscles also play a role in our regulation and response to insulin/blood sugar management and hormonal balance.

So while I love my running and all things cardio - that does very little to change my metabolism. Trying to focus more on that muscle mass however plays a firsthand role in that metabolic function.

Migraines can at times be linked to various environmental factors or even nutrient deficiencies...

Some common food triggers may include:
👉🏽Aged cheeses
👉🏽wine/alcohol
👉🏽Aspartame
👉🏽caffeine
👉🏽cures or canned/processed meats
👉🏽chocolate
👉🏽histamine releasing foods such as bananas, strawberries, oranges, grapefruit
👉🏽nitrites
👉🏽MSG
👉🏽nuts
👉🏽sulfites
👉🏽soy sauce
👉🏽salty food items
👉🏽onions/olives

In some cases a deficiency of magnesium may impact migraines- some food sources of magnesium are actually also possible triggers so it is important to understand both...
Foods sources that are not triggers:
✨avocado (avoid it being over-ripe)
✨leafy greens
✨fatty fish- salmon
✨potato with skin

Monitoring individual symptoms and possible triggers is also key because our bodies are all uniquely made.

Working on some fun new stuff...

Stay tuned!!!

Any nutrition info you thought was fact and later found out it was a myth?

We live in a information overloaded world and deciding the facts from myths can be very misleading.

Allergies and allergic rhinitis are often the result of a heighten and overactive immune response. This can be triggered by many different underlying factors. Understanding how foods and our environment play a role may be helpful in reducing symptoms/aiding in relief long term.

🍽The standard American diet over the years has shown to provide a high intake of ⬆️omega 6 fatty acids and in turn decrease in ⬇️omega 3 fatty acids

🤦🏽‍♀️ this shift is thought to have ⬆️ increased the risk for inflammatory responses and overall inflammation (allergies, asthma, arthritis, and the list goes on ...)- scientists are always researching more...

Omega 6 fatty acids are found in a ton of processed food items... which can often lead to us eating them in high excess...

Some oils that are high in Omega 6 include safflower oil, sunflower oil, corn 🌽 oils, soybean oil ...

while most foods contain a combination of both omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids it is best to focus on more whole food sources such as nuts/seeds vs more processed food item sources

✨Less processed fats/oils include:
Coconut oil
Ghee
Cold pressed extra virgin olive oil

👉🏽(Remember these are better choices but some still contain saturated fat and still should also be consumed in moderation especially when also considering individual health status)

✨Another way to help with allergic relief is always to make sure you are getting enough vitamin C (a natural antihistamine).
✨In addition Quercetin is a polyphenol found in many fruits and vegetables that acts to block the histamine and reduce inflammation.

Resistant Starches have many health benefits...

✨possible benefits to insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control
✨possible benefits to helping increase satiety/weight management
✨helping feed our healthy bacteria in the gut
✨possible benefits to colon health and digestive health
✨assist in reduced inflammation and inflammatory responses

🌱Food Sources🌱
✨oats
✨lentils
✨legumes
✨cooked and cooled rice
✨potato(cooked and cooled)
✨yams
✨peas
✨pearl barley
✨under ripe banana

Organic Acid Tests can be extremely helpful in identifying imbalances or deficiencies on a more functional level.

This can allow for more specific nutritional recommendations tailored to your individual needs.

✨metabolic function
✨immune health
✨vitamin/nutrient deficiencies
✨GI health and gut Dysbiosis
✨inflammation
✨mitochondrial function
✨oxidative stress

Let’s start glowing and treat more of the root cause. ✨💪🏽✨

✨Allergies allergies allergies....?✨

Did you know that not only does Vitamin C act as a huge contributor to helping boost our immune system BUT it also packs a mean punch to fending off allergies 💪🏽 (depending on the actual root cause of the allergies- again not one size fits all)...

Acting as a natural antihistamine it may be beneficial in helping to reduce and alleviate symptoms.

Vitamin C rich foods:
🥦 broccoli
🍓 strawberries
Bell peppers
🥝 kiwi
Winter squash
🍅 tomato
🍊 citrus fruits

They have also studied the possibility that deficiency in vit C can trigger or increase allergic type symptoms.

👎The vast majority of “quick fixes” come at the expense of increased risk of other health complications.

✨To achieve lasting health and to determine a root cause of other underlying symptoms it often takes some investigative work. That may mean monitoring symptoms or further testing recommendations BUT the end result will be one step closer to healing. Nutrition is not one size fits all and goals for healing should not be either. Nutrition must be looked at from a whole body approach vs any single part alone. ✨

✨And the real kicker- When care is tailored to your individual needs you will often be surprised how quickly you start to see and feel results.✨

A little of my journey: private practice has always been my dream goal but one I never thought would come to fruition-

I attended Rutgers University followed by working with WIC as a nutritionist. I went onto complete my dietetic internship at a local hospital and complete more extensive rotations in pediatric diabetes, neonatal intensive care, as well as a cystic fibrosis clinic. After completing my dietetic internship I continued to work at WIC in education and as a clinical dietitian with focus on cardiac care and infant nursery. In clinical I was able to learn the more intense aspects of care in acute settings BUT less teaching opportunities for more preventive care.

Eventually I accepted a position as the sole dietitian providing care for a rehab and long term care center. There I was able to participate more in one on one teaching with residents and see more effective outcomes as we were able to work closely. I also briefly provided coverage during this time for a pediatric day center. we worked as a team to develop care plans for our high nutrition risk clients (feeding concerns and malabsorption).

This was about the time I found out I was pregnant with my first child- and I started to look for a job closer to home. In 2013 I accepted a speciality position in an outpatient Diabetes Center. New to the field I was given the most amazing nurse educators to help guide me and by spring 2014 I passed my exam for diabetes education. This position eventually branched out into two programs - the Diabetes Outpatient Center in addition to a Wellness and Weight Management Program- I worked extensively 1 on 1 and community/group programs.
✨This fall the programs were closed- during the months leading up to the closure I felt a strong urge to move to private practice- I was on my own journey of healing this past year and started a BoardCertification in Integrative&Functional Nutrition. I felt God guiding this path for me in ways I have never felt before. Ohana Glow started as me wanting to make toxic free lotions/products (I still do but has taken a back seat at the moment- I’ll get there !) 2.5 weeks ago we officially launched
