If you are having low back pain and are exercising because you think that doing something is better for your back than doing nothing, you may be doing yourself more harm than benefit.
Many conditions that create low back pain are due to muscle imbalances. These imbalances will distort your spine and pelvis until, you got it... the pain sets in!
Unfortunately, if you don't know what muscles are imbalanced, you won’t know what is needed to correct it.
In my experience of over 40 years, I have found that sitting creates the biggest problem to overcoming low back pain.
So many of my patients have this imbalance from sitting, that it is practically unanimous for me to give them this one suggestion that they all love doing.
Without going into detailed anatomy, my basic attitude about what exercises to do are those that put you into a different position than you have been doing for several hours.
So if you’ve been doing a lot of sitting/driving, I would recommend brisk walking. If you have a slight hill or incline to climb all the better to work and strengthen your quads your glutes.
And it feels great to do.
