FUN FACT FRIDAY ABOUT MILK-MAKING. Did you know you grow more milk-making cells in your breasts with each pregnancy? So the more pregnancies you have, the more grapes (erhm.. I mean milk-making cells) you’ll have! 🍇
Were you a first time mom struggling with milk supply like me? I don’t think a day went by where I didn’t think about ways to at least keep up my supply.
Second time around? A BOUNTIFUL supply! Now there are many factors for this, but one is because the hormone changes that you go through in pregnancy help your body make more milk-making cells. So in addition to the ones you had from your last pregnancy, you’ll have some more!
Pretty neat huh? So if your breastfeeding journey didn’t work out the way you wanted to your first time, it likely won’t be the same the second time around (for many reasons, having more milk-making cells being one of them!) 🙌🏻
I’ll have way more information like this on my website, where the launch is coming in March. Be the first to know! Link in the bio or go to breastfeedingdietitian.com 🤱

HOMEMADE BABY FORMULA

I cannot fathom not being able to feed my baby. Due to the current baby formula shortages, I figured I would share the recipe that I have recommended for the past 15+ years to mothers and caretakers that desire to nourish their infant well. It was developed by my friend Sally Fallon-Morell to mimic the nutrient profile of mama’s milk utilizing real, nutrient-dense ingredients. This can also be found on the Weston A. Price foundation’s website.

INGREDIENTS
* 2 cups whole raw cow’s milk, preferably from pasture-fed cows
* 1/4 cup homemade liquid whey (See recipe for whey, below) Note: Do NOT use powdered whey or whey from making cheese (which will cause the formula to curdle). Use only homemade whey made from yoghurt, kefir or separated raw milk.
* 4 tablespoons lactose1
* 1/4 teaspoon bifidobacterium infantis2
* 2 or more tablespoons good quality cream (preferably not ultrapasteurized), more if you are using milk from Holstein cows
* 1/2 teaspoon unflavored cod liver oil
* 1 teaspoon expeller-expressed sunflower oil
* 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
* 2 teaspoons coconut oil
* 2 teaspoons Frontier brand nutritional yeast flakes
* 2 teaspoons gelatin
* 1-7/8 cups filtered water
* 1/4 teaspoon acerola powder

INSTRUCTIONS
* Put 2 cups filtered water into a pyrex measuring pitcher and remove 2 tablespoons (that will give you 1-7/8 cups water).
* Pour about half of the water into a pan and place on a medium flame.
* Add the gelatin and lactose to the pan and let dissolve, stirring occasionally.
* When the gelatin and lactose are dissolved, remove from heat and add the remaining water to cool the mixture.
* Stir in the coconut oil and optional high-vitamin butter oil and stir until melted.
* Meanwhile, place remaining ingredients into a blender.
* Add the water mixture and blend about three seconds.
* Place in glass bottles or a glass jar and refrigerate.
* Before giving to baby, warm bottles by placing in hot water or a bottle warmer. NEVER warm bottles in a microwave oven.

Wow!

Two babies in Virginia are going viral because they're cousins . . . and also twin BROTHERS.
They've got the same DNA, because both sets of parents are IDENTICAL TWINS. Their moms are identical and married two identical twin brothers. So in addition to being cousins, the two babies are also "genetic brothers"
If they took a DNA test, it would say they're siblings, even though they're not. Their parents met in 2017 at a festival for twins, and got married a year later. Now they all live together in the same house.

Breastfeeding is hard work. It’s really hard work.
It’s sleepless nights, it’s cluster feeding 24/7, it’s not leaving the house because you’re insecure about feeding in public, it’s judgement, it’s pain, its emotional, it’s learning, it’s missing out, it’s feeling like your body no longer belongs to you, it’s waking up every two hours (at most), it’s lonely, it’s changing your anatomy, it’s choosing someone else over yourself every single day, it’s overcoming fear and uncertainty, it’s guilt, it’s isolating - it’s really fu***ng hard.
Anyone who says otherwise is lying. Anyone who says it’s easy is lying. Anyone who has ever suggested that it is anything less than really hard is lying.
And despite all that - you’re doing it. You’re doing it every single day. You’re choosing your baby over yourself every single day. You’re saying ‘I’m okay with all of this because I’m putting my baby first - I’m okay with sacrificing my body, my needs and my wants because I’m choosing her. And I’m going to always choose her’. You’re fu***ng incredible. We are fu***ng incredible - every single one of us.
Because no matter how much we evolve as humans, we are the exception that remains unchangeable. We scream, roar and cry out as we grit our teeth and bring forth life into this world. And then we continue to sustain that life with the same body that has just created, carried and birthed her. We encounter pain that no man could fathom and we welcome it with open arms.
Because today and every day, we are choosing them.

We are fu***ng phenomenal. You are fu***ng phenomenal.
I made this baby. And for 11 entire months I have provided for her. Me. I did that.
YOU DID THAT, TOO. Do not let anyone ever discourage you or make you feel unimportant, because you are invaluable.
I just had to say it. Because some days I feel defeated and I forget how phenomenal we mothers are. We aren’t told that enough. We have to be the reminder each of us need and deserve. We have to lift each other up.

Thank you mama: Adrienne Weierke

Newborn babies are not biologically designed to sleep through the night. They are designed to breastfeed. Breastfed babies need to nurse at night.
The ease of digestibility of breast milk ensures optimal growth and immune development when the baby is nursed frequently.
Mamas all vary when it comes to how much milk their breasts can store, so night feedings are essential to maintaining milk supply as well as meeting babies nutritional needs. Some babies want to feed more at night simply because there’s more milk.

The medical definition of "sleeping through the night" is 5 hours. If your baby has ever gone to sleep at 8 PM and woken up at 1 AM, they slept through the night. Congrats!! However most healthy newborns awaken every 2 to 3 hours, 24 hours a day, to eat. For some babies, this pattern of waking during the night continues for many months. If you’re currently on , just know balancing sleep and night feedings is temporary and your baby will eventually outgrow this stage. There is light at the end of this sleep-deprived tunnel!⁣
⁣
If you're hoping for baby to have a longer stretch of sleep, it's important that he or she feeds a lot during the day. For example, if your baby is waking up for three night feedings, those feedings need to be moved to during the day. They can't simply be omitted. Alternatively, a baby should not be forced to eat more than he/she is willing to eat either, so this may or may not work. Many babies eat at least once during the night. These night feeds can be the largest for the 24-hour period and make up 20% of baby's total milk intake. Night feeds are important but they won't last forever! Who else has a baby who loves to fall asleep on the b**b?

Hold the mother and not her baby yet. Come by and actually see the mother. She has also been newly born. She and her baby both need rest, warmth, loving touch, comfort & safety.

She matter too! Please don’t forget about her after the baby is born.

Help her out with the chores, cook her warm meals and just support her through this new transition.

She may not need you to hold her baby right now. All she needs is just love and a village that cares. ❤️
