Do you have difficulties having your child try new foods?🍊🥦🍝

Here are a few tips and tricks to expand your child’s dietary food intake!

-Cut up foods into smaller pieces 🍽

-Present your child one new piece of food on a plate in front of them.

-First Step: Model touching the piece of food to your lips👄 . Then have the child imitate this behavior. (Tip: Pretending to kiss the food can make it more fun for your child!)

-Once the child successfully imitates this step, REINFORCE by giving lots of social praise (ie. great job!!!!). Repeat this first step a couple more times until your child has become comfortable independently touching the new food to their lips

-Second Step: Model licking the food and have your child copy **Remember to give praise (ie. Great job licking apple!) Do this step a couple more times.

-Third step: Demonstrate placing food in your mouth, then chewing, and spitting out. Repeat the imitation procedure and reinforce. This will slowly transition to swallowing.

-Last step: Tell your child to “take a bite” and model placing food in mouth, chewing, and swallowing. (Tip: Show your child your empty mouth after consumption. This will teach them the end result of eating new foods)

-Remember to make it fun!! 😀

⏱ ⏲ Does your child struggle with waiting??? ⏰

Here are some helpful ABA tips:

1. Practice waiting together, frequently, for items your child wants, starting with small amounts of time (5-10 seconds) and increase over time.

2. Use a visual timer ⏲ (there are so many great apps for this, and kids love seeing the picture reveal after they’ve waited- it’s a great added reinforcer)

3. Practice counting together while waiting

4. When your child is able to wait patiently, give them lots of praise and REINFORCE this important skill!

And remember practice, practice, practice!

By practicing waiting when your child is calm, they are much more likely to be able to wait appropriately and earn that reinforcement, and overall strengthen this skill for the more difficult moments when waiting is not an option! 🙂

Happy Wednesay!!! Here's today's "Tips and Tricks for Parents at Home!"

**Teach your child to communicate for things they want!**

((When your child struggles to tell you what they want, they can quickly become frustrated and use protests or tantrums to get their needs met. As parents, we often struggle to figure out what our children want when they are escalated in a tantrum. ))

You can teach your child to ask for things:

—Putting toys away at home, and having them just out of reach, in clear plastic bins (they can see the toys, you can see which toys they may be reaching for/ indicating that they want it), and you will be able to give them the words to ask for the items they want, before giving them the toys.
—Once your child indicates (by pointing at the item, or saying the name of the item- whatever is appropriate for them), give them the toy(s) immediately.

***This teaches your child that when they use words, or appropriate gestures like pointing, they can get what they want- without tanntruming or protesting! Their words have power!***

Using this tip, it will Increase Opportunities for your child to ASK for items, and allow you to help teach your child to ask.

You can use this tip for anything your child likes, including favorite snacks, toys, materials for activities they enjoy, and more!

Happy Wednesday! Todays Helpful ABA Tip is Giving Choices!

—As adults, we love the ability to choose. This is true for our children, as well!

—By offering our children choices, especially surrounding activities they may be less than thrilled about, we are giving them some control. This can have a powerful effect on empowering our children to make choices, focus their attention on the activities that are about to happen, and decrease challenging behaviors!

—Try this!: Before transitioning your child to an activity they have disliked in the past:
1. Plan for 2 choices you can give to your child, ahead of time.
2. Transition them by offering the choices, and allow them to pick the chain of events, or some aspect of the activity. (Ex. “It’s time to get dressed! Do you want to pick out your clothes, or me?” OR “It’s time for school, would you like to park and walk up together, or drive through the drop off lane?”)

Planning ahead for choices is a great way to make difficult transitions easier! 🤗
