A large number of Indiana therapists joined a town hall today with Anthem/Carelon to dispute a new contract we have been handed. Basically, we are being forced to accept insulting reimbursement rates (almost a 50% cut), or get off the network. A colleague who was in the meeting had this to say to the Anthem representatives:

In my counseling sessions this week, the theme of grief kept coming up over and over again. Grieving our “normal”, grieving the losses that have come with COVID, grieving the changes with schooling, grieving physical touch, relationships, and gatherings. Whatever you may be grieving in this season, know that it’s valid. Grief is not a punishment, but rather a reward. If you’re grieving, it’s because you were living!

Pioneered by therapist and researcher Pauline Boss, the theory of ambiguous loss validates the human experience of grief over losses where no verification of death is present. Ambiguous loss gives language to the experience of grief related to losses such as breakups, aging parents, being laid off, infertility, adoption, and so many other losses we experience. If you have experienced a loss of any kind, your grief is valid.

Toxic shame refers to the internal feelings and experiences of our own worthlessness, failure, or not-enoughness. Oftentimes toxic shame is generational, passed down from one generation to the next. If you experience toxic shame in your life, it is possible that your parents did too. The first step to ending the cycle of generational shame is naming it for what it is. By raising your awareness of shame’s influence on your thoughts, behaviors, and relationships, you can be the start of a new narrative for your family.
