Part 3 of our fertility advice!
To prepare your body for carrying a baby, a high-quality prenatal vitamin should be started at least three months prior to attempting conception. This preconception window is critical, as it allows time to replenish key micronutrients that support ovulation, implantation, and early fetal development.
Women who have previously used hormonal contraceptives are at increased risk for depletion of essential nutrients such as folate, vitamin B12, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin B6—nutrients that are vital for a healthy pregnancy. Research suggests that restoring nutrient stores before conception is associated with improved pregnancy outcomes and supports optimal placental and fetal development during the earliest stages of gestation, often before a woman knows she is pregnant.
When selecting a prenatal vitamin, look for formulations that include:
* Methylated folate (5-MTHF) rather than synthetic folic acid, to support proper folate metabolism
* Chelated minerals, which are more bioavailable and easier to absorb
* Methylcobalamin (active vitamin B12) for neurologic and cellular support
* DHA, an essential omega-3 fatty acid that plays a critical role in fetal brain and nervous system development.
This prenatal vitamin made by Orthomolecular meets all of these requirements and it’s the one I recommend to my patients.
