We continue to celebrate a leader whose vision has shaped the story of healthcare in our region for nearly forty years: Dr. John M. Murphy has guided our hospitals through transformation, challenges and growth. His actions have always anchored by one belief: that every community deserves exceptional care. 💙

From his early days as a neurologist, to the creation of Nuvance Health and merger with Northwell Health, Dr. Murphy has never lost sight of the people at the center of healthcare. His decisions have strengthened hospitals, supported caregivers and brought hope to families when they needed it most.

As he prepares for retirement this month, we are proud to honor his legacy with the John M. Murphy, MD Distinguished Chair of Research — ensuring his commitment to discovery, education and the future of care continues for generations to come. 🔬📚

Dr. Murphy’s leadership will continue to impact countless lives ahead!

The holidays come with traditions, treats and a little extra indulgence — and that’s OK. ✨🍽️

Nurse Practitioner Erica Seebeck shares a reminder we all need to hear this time of year: health and wellness aren’t defined by a few meals, a few days or a single season. They’re built over time, through balance, consistency and grace for yourself.

Food is meant to be enjoyed. Movement is meant to support you. Rest is part of health, too. There’s no need to “make up for” the holidays or feel guilt around celebrating with the people you love.

This season, we invite you to zoom out. Enjoy the moments, savor the meals, listen to your body and remember that real wellness is what you practice year-round. ❤️

The Connecticut Department of Health has confirmed the first measles case in the state in more than four years. Measles is highly contagious, which makes awareness and prevention essential. 🛡️

Here is what you need to know to prevent catching it, and what to do if you have it:

The MMR vaccine provides strong protection for children and adults. If you are not sure about your MMR vaccine status, call your primary care provider. They can review your records and guide you on next steps.

Watch for symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash that spreads across the body.

If symptoms appear, call your provider before coming in so precautions can be taken.

Staying informed and up to date on vaccines is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your community. ✔️

If winter feels a little heavier every year, you are not imagining it. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is common, and it can show up as low energy, irritability, anxiety or that overall dip in motivation. 📉

Hygge is the Danish practice of creating cozy, comforting moments and it is one small way to bring warmth back into a season that can feel cold in more ways than one. It's about soft light, cozy textures and simple routines that help your mind slow down. It is comfort you can create on purpose. 🕯️🧣

✨ Light is your best friend
Warm lamps, candles and soft glows can help lift your mood when daylight is limited. Even small lighting changes can make a difference for SAD symptoms.

✨ Make your home a cozy zone
Think plush blankets, comfy socks, soothing scents and anything that signals calm. When your space feels warm your body often follows.

✨ Stay connected even on low energy days
A simple dinner, a movie night or a quick chat with a friend can bring emotional warmth back into winter. Social connection is a powerful buffer against SAD.

✨ Move gently
A bundled walk, a slow yoga flow or a couple minutes of stretching can boost serotonin and help you feel a little more like yourself.

✨ Small mindful rituals help
Tea time, gratitude journaling or curling up under a blanket can create grounding moments when your mood feels off.

Winter can be tough but hygge helps you build little pockets of comfort, connection and calm. A softer season is possible.

POV: You’re Santa Claus, gearing up for the big night and choosing the milk that will help you enjoy your cookies while still fitting down every chimney. 🥛✨🎅🏼

You love cookies (who doesn’t?) but you also need a milk that will not slow you down or add extra pounds during your busiest season. As you sort through your options at the North Pole Taste Test, here is how they stack up:

🥇 1st Place: Unsweetened almond milk
Light, low in calories and easy to enjoy with snacks or meals. It keeps you nimble on the sleigh.

🥈 2nd Place: Skim milk
High in protein without added fat, giving you steady energy from dusk until dawn.

🥉 3rd Place: Unsweetened soy milk
Nutrient dense and naturally filling. It helps you stay satisfied as you check your list twice.

🏅 Honorable mentions
Whole milk is rich and comforting but higher in calories and saturated fat. Sweetened oat, coconut and rice milks taste great but often contain more added sugar than expected.

If you or a loved one ever face prostate cancer, understanding treatment options is key. Dr. Philip Gilbo explains how most treatments are not one-size-fits-all. Men are often presented with multiple options based on their stage, health and goals.

Here’s what to look for in a treatment plan:

✔️ A personalized approach
✔️ A multispecialty team
✔️ A clear explanation of your options
✔️ A focus on quality of life
✔️ Access to advanced diagnostics and technology

The right plan should help you an informed choice, not a rushed one.

Talk with your doctor about all available options so you can move forward with clarity and confidence. 💙

Three consecutive "A's" for Putnam Hospital. 🏆🍂

We are proud to share that Putnam Hospital has earned an "A" Safety Grade for Fall 2025 from The Leapfrog Group. This places us among a small group of hospitals nationwide recognized for their strong commitment to patient safety and quality care.

“This is a nationally recognized score that reflects the effort a hospital puts into keeping patients safe every day,” said hospital President Dr. Mark Hirko. “It validates the work done by every member of the Putnam Hospital team in our pursuit of exceptional patient safety.”

Since the fall of 2024, Putnam Hospital has received an A grade three times in a row, demonstrating our continued commitment to protecting patients from preventable errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

At Putnam Hospital, patient safety is an ongoing journey. One of the important practices that supports this work is our daily safety huddle, which brings together departments from across the hospital to identify and resolve safety concerns in real time. It is one of the many ways we work every day to keep our patients safe. 💙
