Why do so many patients tell me their skin improves when they travel abroad? Or lose weight despite eating all the pasta?
While I was in Italy recently, I understood why. I felt better. The food was fresher. Meals were simpler. The pace was slower. I walked everywhere.
And interestingly, this pattern isnāt just anecdotal. Studies show higher adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet is associated with lower psoriasis and eczema severity scores.
Extra virgin olive oil, legumes, leafy vegetables, fish, and a lower intake of ultra-processed foods are all components linked to reduced systemic inflammation.
Add natural sunlight, increased daily movement, and improved sleep, and the physiologic environment shifts.
