I know therapy is working when __________.

How do you finish that sentence?

Last week I shared about unseen influences, this one stood at to me when I was thinking about ideas for my reel. Working with people, sometimes it’s easy to rush ahead into “the work” overlooking the work starts with slowing down.

That process can be uncomfortable for a lot of reasons, it’s when we start to see patterns and continue to engage with them…only we start to understand that’s what we don’t want anymore. So the same topics emerge week after week, and the conclusion emerges that it’s not working.

This is what therapy feels like sometimes, it’s messy.

Leaving therapy and feeling not great? It’s not uncommon and assumptions live on that therapy equates to feeling better right away. Therapists are committed to not doing harm; but that doesn’t mean we can provide quick fixes to alleviate symptoms immediately.

So what ~should~ therapy feel like?

Unseen influences expand beyond therapy but here are a few ideas about the way it shows up in the counseling space. Trying to explain the experience of rapport can be difficult to conceptualize, but when it’s working we can feel it!

We know that a solid working relationship in therapy contributes to improved outcomes. What do you think about unseen influences? Do you think you can see some of these concepts?

Often, we navigate our daily lives without fully understanding how unspoken societal norms influence our decisions and behavior. These hidden forces shape how we perceive ourselves, from our career choices to our relationships. Social expectations, ingrained through cultural beliefs and reinforced by community practices, can subtly yet powerfully mold our self-awareness.

BTS happenings as a clinical supervisor. Last week I shared about trauma stewardship in the realm of clinical supervisors, here’s a bit more about what it actually means.

Stewardship allows there to be an owner of the experience, entrusted to those who are supporting the work of another. This exists outside of the therapy space as well, helping us all to access the collective experience of being a human being.

Whether you’re supporting a new generation of clinicians, or radiating kindness to the person crossing the street next to you, stewardship reminds us that it’s a collective process. We all can contribute to another.

Winters final rinse here in Pittsburgh. A fresh snow fall this morning reminds us to slow down and receive the nourishment from winter. It’s easy to rush ahead to the warmth and brightness of spring, instead invite yourself to pause with the stillness of winter a final time. ❄️

More on why I’m sharing about consultations, helping to build literacy around therapy helps others find what their looking for. Knowing that you CAN ask questions, you CAN be curious, it helps to support a stronger therapeutic relationship…the cornerstone of how therapy works!

Strong, early established alliance is strongly linked to reduced symptoms of depression, anxiety and PTSD. The relationship can hold corrective experiences, different from what you may experience in other types of relationships.
