On this MLK Day, we reflect on Dr. King’s call to lead with compassion, courage, and action especially when it’s uncomfortable. Choosing light means choosing equity, access, and the right to be heard.

Core words aren’t just “simple words.” They’re powerful tools for connection, choice, and self-expression. Focusing on core words in AAC builds language that lasts across every activity, setting, and conversation.

“Inspire, don’t require.”

When supporting AAC users, our job isn’t to demand responses — it’s to create communication-rich moments that invite them in. Model. Pause. Wait. Connect.
Communication grows when it feels safe, not forced.

Stop turning every interaction into a pop quiz.

AAC users deserve time to process what’s been said, time to find the words, and time to build a response. When we rush in with question after question, we don’t support communication… we interrupt it.

Try mixing it up:
-make comments instead of always asking
-model language without pressure to respond
-share observations
-give real wait time

Conversation isn’t about speed, it’s about connection.
Let’s slow down and make space for AAC voices to be heard.

AAC is so much more than a device and so much less limiting than many people think.

AAC is:
✔️ a way to access language
✔️ a bridge to connection
✔️ a tool for independence
✔️ a support for learning, literacy, and self-advocacy

AAC is NOT:
❌ a last resort
❌ something you have to earn
❌ a replacement for thinking or learning
❌ a barrier to speech

AAC doesn’t take anything away. It gives communication a way in. And every person deserves that access.
