Your path to personal transformation:

Starts with a Thought that needs an Intention, which looks for a Behavior that repeats and turns into a Habit that becomes a Practice, which evokes a Second Nature and now Identity.

I wonder if you know this:

Your presence on this earth, in our world, matters. Your life matters.

You bring something no one else can—a special light, a heart that has touched others in ways you may never see or know.

You are needed, valued, and important.

What Anxiety Is:

Anxiety is a condition brought on by an increased amount of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline (also called epinephrine) These 2 hormones are released during the fight or flight response to either perceived or real danger or stress held within from unresolved past traumatic events.

Adrenaline/Epinephrine causes the immediate physical symptoms such as a racing heart, rapid breathing, and heightened alertness. It helps the body react quickly in times of danger.

Cortisol is a longer-acting stress hormone that helps maintain the fight-or-flight response by keeping blood sugar levels elevated and suppressing non-essential functions like digestion and immune responses.

The Response, however, is a Natural Response
While these hormones are beneficial in short bursts, chronic anxiety can lead to an overproduction of cortisol, which can have negative effects on the mind and body over time.

It becomes a problem when it is out of proportion to the situation or when it consistently interferes with a person’s functioning level/abilities.

Symptoms include constant worry, heart palpitations, trembling tension, dizziness, hyperventilation and more.

Other health problems such as high blood pressure, depression, insomnia, appetite disorders, and digestive disorders can accompany anxiety.

Untreated or prolonged anxiety can lead to increased severity and panic attacks.

Some Root Causes
Stress, diet/poor nutrition, alcohol and street drugs, some prescription medications, neurotransmitter imbalance, thyroid problems and mitro-valve prolapse can all contribute to the onset of anxiety.

Many foods are known anxiety producers such as caffeine, alcohol, sugar and simple carbohydrates.

Treatment targets and relies on diet, exercise, homeopathy and nutritional supplements along with Mental Health therapy.

Prevention, of course, is always recommended through Mental Health and holistic wellness via a healthy lifestyle, nutrition, exercise and sleep hygiene, breath work, prayer, journaling and self awareness to name a few.

Effective Treatment is Available
Mind/Body work, stress reduction techniques, dietary/lifestyle improvements, EMDR, Hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are some of the recommended and evidence based therapies to reduce and manage anxiety.

By utilizing techniques that address both the mind and body, control over anxiety can be obtained resulting in improvement in well-being overall.

There are multiple effective strategies for managing anxiety. Learning to recognize and address the body’s response to anxiety, directs and decreases symptoms allowing for space to enjoy healthy living minus the constraints of anxiety.

Let's Talk About Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

SAD is a type of depression that follows a seasonal pattern. We typically see it during the winter months when daylight lessens considerably.

SAD is often masked by the daily tasks of life, i.e., family, work, school, etc. So, it might be missed, undiagnosed and untreated because people write it off as fatigue and stress alone.

Symptoms include:
Persistent Low Mood. Feeling sad or hopeless most of the time.
Fatigue. A sense of exhaustion that doesn’t go away, even after rest.
Difficulty Concentrating. Trouble focusing or staying organized.
Increased Sleep and Appetite. Sleeping more than usual or craving carbs and comfort foods.
Loss of Interest. A lack of motivation for activities you once enjoyed.

Both men and women experience SAD; but women are diagnosed with it 4 times more often than men.

Why:
1. Fluctuations in hormones can and do exacerbate mood changes. These spikes and dips are especially present during menstrual cycles, pregnancy and menopause.

2. Life Roles and the accompanying pressure.
Women fulfill multiple roles, leading to increased release of stress hormones, mental, physical, emotional fatigue, decreased self-care and increased anxiety.

3. Biology. Women are more likely to experience general depression, which increases the likelihood of SAD.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is Treatable.
Try the following:
1. Increase your exposure to Light.
SAD is linked to reduced daylight, so going outside during daylight hours is a must. But, if that’s not possible, use light therapy, which mimics natural sunlight and can improve symptoms.

2. Prioritize Movement. Exercise. It’s one of the best ways to improve your mood. You don't have to stress yourself out by thinking that you must do hour long workouts or classes at the gym in order to benefit. You don't. Just move. Take a 20-minute walk and you will notice the difference.

3. Practice Rest. We often feel guilty for taking a break, but rest is essential for recovery, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Permit yourself to restore through activities like reading, meditating, praying, journaling, practicing breathwork and relaxation or just being still in the silence of your own sacred spot for a half hour- 1 hour each day.

4. Seek Professional Help. If your symptoms persist or interfere with daily life, reach out to a therapist or medical provider. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), lifestyle changes, vitamin supplements and certain medications can be incredibly effective for SAD.

Trauma needs and deserves treatment and healing.
Release and resolve.
Recognition and admission.
Purge the past.
Let it go.
Get the help you need to live a full and free life.

Who needs this today?

As you navigate today's tragedy in your life, don't confuse it or mix it with yesterday's trauma.

Even if the two mirror one another, they are separate, different,
and so are you.

Stay present. Be mindful. Invite peace. Promote your own healing.

Use new coping methods. If you don't have any, ask.

Let yourself feel what you need to feel, process it, give it space and then lay it to rest.

It's going to work out.

Your well being matters.

You matter.

Our Story

Betsy's Place Inc. is a Children’s Residential Treatment Facility. We provide Trauma Focused Mental Health Treatment to boys between the ages of 7-17 victimized by abuse and neglect.

We provide all services on site, including our own school.

When the boys complete their treatment goals, they move on from us which is always a bittersweet day filled with celebration, tears, laughter and hope.

We have operated for nearly 10 years and have had many successful stories that have led to children going home, being adopted or moving to foster care.
