Fascinating!

The human fascial network is, in fact, our richest sensory organ.

The estimated number of nerve endings in the body-wide fascial system is 250 million, compared with the estimated 200 million nerve endings in the skin.

Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of osteopathy, wrote that, “No doubt nerves exist in the fascia . . .” and suggested all fascial tissues should be treated with the same respect as if dealing with “the branch offices of the brain.”

I’ve been working with this client for months on his chronic shoulder issues. Great news arrived from him this morning… “No pain in the 2 mile swim. And my time was better than all of the 40 year olds.”

While the practice remains closed due to the Pandemic, we are planning to re-open when it is safe to do so! If you are an existing client, you will be notified by email. If you are not currently a client and would like to be added to our email list, please send a message to Kate at kks.lmbt@gmail.com. I look forward to working with you soon.

I am sad to report the need to remain closed. Before resuming sessions, I would like to see the statistics on the spread of COVID-19 in our community trending downward for AT LEAST two consecutive weeks. I closely watch the numbers at both the state and local level, and we are nowhere near that benchmark. Among many other considerations, the fact that the local school district is holding all classes virtually for the entire first semester is indicative of the risk, AND of our community’s attempt to control the infection rate. I cannot, in good conscience, act in a way that will add to this risk. I look forward to seeing you, on my table or out in the community, as soon as it is safe to do so. Please stay in touch!

Several months back, Tyrone Irby invited me to speak to a group of athletes at Stronger and Faster gym in Durham. Among other things, I discussed the importance of self-care massage, and demonstrated several ways to access and affect sticky, hard-to-reach spots. If you miss having regular body-work, there are some techniques that can bridge the gap until we can safely work in close contact again. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if I can help. I’m happy to talk you through some things to ease what’s ailing you.

Thankfully, I’m not part of a franchise and can make decisions independently, but this letter really supports my decision to keep you all safe by remaining closed. I miss you, and look forward to working together when it’s again safe to do so. Right now though, it’s simply too soon.

To owners of spas, franchises, chiropractic offices. High-volume massage therapy settings. You in Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma and so many other states allowing re-opening: Employers, much has been made of your efforts to step up your safety protocols and get ready for re-opening. Edited with updated re-open prediction...

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, and the NC Governor's stay at home orders, Kate Kager Smith Massage Therapy will remain closed until further notice. Right now, it looks like mid-late June might be the earliest date to re-open. This is the responsible and ethical course of action to slow the spread of this virus, protect ourselves, one another, and the community at large.

If I can be of help with any issues that arise, please don't hesitate to reach out (cell phone is best). In many cases, I can offer suggestions for movement, stretching and self- or partner-massage techniques that will help until I can resume hands-on work. As ever, I am grateful to you all for your loyalty, and I look forward to seeing you when it's once again safe to do so.

Please stay well. Try to get adequate rest, eat healthy foods, hydrate, move, stretch and remember to wash your hands!

How wonderful to work with your athletes, Tyrone! Thanks for having me!
