🚨 Public Safety Training Exercise | Nov. 4 🚨

On Nov. 4, we’re joining local public safety partners in Carrollton for a county-wide training exercise to help ensure our community — and our care teams — are ready for any emergency.

While patients and visitors on campus at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton may see increased activity at the hospital during the drill, there’s no cause for concern. This exercise is only a drill.

🚨 Public Safety Training Exercise 🚨

On Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Carroll County public safety agencies, healthcare partners, and local law enforcement will participate in a full-scale hazardous materials training exercise at West Georgia Technical College – Carrollton Campus.

This planned drill will simulate a HazMat explosion and test emergency response, decontamination, transport, and hospital protocols. Increased first responder presence will be visible in the area, but there is no cause for public concern.

Participating agencies include:

Carroll County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Management, Carroll County Fire Rescue, Carrollton Fire Department, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Carrollton Police Department, University of West Georgia Police Department, West Georgia Technical College Police, Carroll County E-911, West Georgia Regional HazMat Team, Tanner Health, West Georgia Ambulance, and Air Evac.

Tanner Heart Care now offers transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) — a minimally-invasive heart valve replacement for severe aortic stenosis.

This procedure offers new hope for patients who may not be candidates for open-heart surgery.

Alongside this launch, we’re excited to open a new six-bed Cardiac Care Unit within the Cardiac Progressive Care Unit on the third floor of Adams Heart Center at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, providing dedicated recovery space for structural heart patients after advanced procedures like TAVR.

Another milestone for heart care! 🫀 🏆

September is AFib Awareness Month, and the team at the Adams Heart Center at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton performed its first atrial fibrillation (AFib) ablation earlier this month. Led by Paul Okhumale, MD, the team is bringing advanced rhythm care closer to home for residents of west Georgia and east Alabama.

Get the fast facts on AFib:
🫀 AFib is the most common heart rhythm disorder and can increase the risk of stroke.
🫀 Some people have no symptoms, while others feel a racing, fluttering or irregular heartbeat.
🫀 Symptoms may include palpitations, fatigue, shortness of breath, chest discomfort and lightheadedness or dizziness.
🫀 Treatment is effective. Options include medications, lifestyle changes and procedures like catheter ablation that target the source of the irregular rhythm.

When to seek care?
📞 Call 911 right away for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath or stroke warning signs, such as face droop, arm weakness or speech difficulty.
📅 Schedule a visit if you notice a new irregular heartbeat, unexplained fatigue or a racing heart, especially if you have risk factors like high blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes or a family history of these conditions.

In a vital step toward strengthening services and support for survivors of sexual assault, Tanner Health has just launched a dedicated Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton.

This important initiative reflects Tanner’s commitment to providing trauma-informed, victim-centered care — ensuring that no one in the aftermath of sexual violence faces recovery alone.

In Georgia, only six other hospitals offer SANE programs, despite the ongoing and urgent need for forensic care following sexual assault. With only a handful of hospital-based SANE programs across the state, this launch positions Tanner as a regional leader in forensic nursing and victim services.

The emergency departments of Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton and Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica have been selected to receive the prestigious 2025 Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award, which recognizes leadership, practice, education and advocacy that resulted in improved patient care and staff well-being.

Both emergency departments were among only 96 emergency departments nationwide to earn this honor in 2025, making Tanner Health one of the few health systems to receive dual recognition.

Shazib Khawaja, MD, FACC, FSCAI, FSVM, a board-certified cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology specialist with Tanner Heart & Vascular Specialists, has been ranked among the metro region’s best in interventional cardiology for the 16th consecutive year.

The July 2025 issue of Atlanta magazine features Dr. Khawaja — who is also chief of interventional cardiology and chair of heart and vascular services at Tanner Health — on its 2025 Top Docs List. Dr. Khawaja is profiled in the issue on page 190. His consistent annual recognitions continue to earn praise from his esteemed colleagues across metro Atlanta.
