Today, March 30, is National Doctors’ Day—a day to express gratitude and appreciation for the dedication, skill, and compassion of physicians. 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

In the Emergency Department, our physicians are on the front lines 24/7—making critical decisions, providing life-saving care, and supporting patients and families through some of their most challenging moments. Their work is fast-paced, unpredictable, and demanding, yet always grounded with a commitment to our community.

Today, we honor all of our Emergency Department physicians who bring expertise, resilience, and heart to every shift.

And today’s spotlight shines on Dr. Militana, pictured here—representing the strength, dedication, and excellence our entire team embodies. Known for a contagious laugh and a genuine desire to meet the needs of every patient, even under pressure, Dr. Militana truly seeks to do all he can to provide the best possible care.

Thank you to each of our ED physicians for showing up, stepping up, and making a difference every single day.

🌡️ What causes a fever—and what is your body doing?

A fever isn’t the illness—it’s your body’s defense system at work.

🦠 What causes a fever?
Most commonly:
• Viral infections (like flu or COVID)
• Bacterial infections
• Inflammation or illness

🔥 What your body is doing:
When it senses infection, your brain (hypothalamus) raises your body’s “set point.”
This helps:
✔️ Slow down germs
✔️ Activate your immune system
✔️ Help your body fight off infection faster

🥶 That’s why you may feel chills first—your body is trying to heat up to that new set point.

💡 Bottom line:
A fever is usually a sign your body is fighting back—not failing.

🚨 “What Rhythm Is That?” – ER Edition 🚨

Think you can spot the difference? 👀 Let’s test your knowledge!

💡 Patient presents with palpitations, dizziness, and a heart rate of 160… what rhythm are you thinking?

Here are a few common rhythms we see in the ER 👇

❤️ Atrial Fibrillation with RVR
Irregular rhythm, no clear P waves
🩺 Treatment may include:
• Rate control (like diltiazem or beta blockers)
• Rhythm control in select cases
• Anticoagulation considerations

⚡ SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia)
Regular, narrow complex, very fast
🩺 Treatment may include:
• Vagal maneuvers
• Adenosine
• Synchronized cardioversion if unstable

💔 Ventricular Tachycardia (VTach)
Wide complex, can be life-threatening
🩺 Treatment may include:
• Amiodarone
• Lidocaine
• Synchronized cardioversion or defibrillation

👀 So… what rhythm would YOU pick?

Drop your answer below ⬇️ and let’s see who’s got those ER skills!

💥 “Your tests are normal.”

…so why is it still hard to diagnose what’s wrong?

👉 Because healthcare isn’t always black and white
👉 Early illness may not show up yet
👉 Some conditions don’t appear on labs or imaging
👉 Symptoms can overlap across many diagnoses
👉 “Normal” ranges don’t always reflect your baseline

🧠 In emergency medicine, we rule out the most dangerous causes first—but not every answer is immediate.

⚠️ Diagnosis can take time, repeat visits, and trending changes.

❤️ If something feels off, keep advocating for yourself.

🚑 Pediatric vs Adult Emergency Care: Not the Same Game 🚑

In the ER, treating kids vs adults isn’t just a smaller blood pressure cuff—it’s a completely different mindset and a different level of training.

👶 Pediatrics:
• Conditions can change FAST—kids compensate well… until they suddenly don’t
• Weight-based everything (meds, fluids, equipment)
• Assessment relies heavily on behavior, appearance, and parental input
• Requires specialized training like PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) for age-specific emergencies

🧑‍⚕️ Adults:
• Often have chronic conditions that complicate care
• Can usually describe symptoms clearly
• Gradual decline is more common
• Guided by protocols like ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) for cardiac and critical events

🎓 Emergency teams train differently for each population because one approach doesn’t fit all. From medication dosing to resuscitation strategies, it all changes based on age and physiology.

💡 No matter the patient, preparation and teamwork are what save lives.

🍀 St. Patrick’s Day, ER Style

Today, we traded in a little bit of chaos for a little bit of green 💚

Our team took a few moments to collect all the green we could find around the department 🍀

Because even on the busiest days, we believe in finding small ways to celebrate, connect, and bring a little joy to the workplace ☘️

Behind every piece of green is a team that shows up ready to care, ready to act, and ready to make a difference—no luck needed 💪🚑

Wishing everyone a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🌈✨
(And yes… we checked—no leprechauns hiding in the supply room 👀🍀)

🚑 A Day in the Life of an ER Nurse 👩‍⚕️

No two days in the Emergency Department are ever the same. One moment an ER nurse may be helping stabilize a critically ill patient, and the next they’re comforting a worried family or caring for a child with a fever.

ER nurses constantly shift mindsets from room to room. One patient may require rapid life-saving interventions, while the next may need reassurance, education, and careful evaluation. Every patient is different, and the ability to adapt quickly is essential.

Behind every assessment, medication, and monitor alarm is a nurse balancing critical thinking, clinical skill, and compassion.

Different patients. Different challenges.
Same mission: providing the care you need, when you need it most. ❤️🏥
