EVCC, A Legacy
by Daisy Lopoz – Visit to EVCC, 9/25

What is a legacy?
Is it measured by the years?
By the people we’ve walked with?
By a dream fulfilled?
I don’t really know.

All I know is — I’m proud.
Proud of Eagle Valley Care Centre,
A home for many seniors,
Serving with love and humility
For over twenty years.

Now, I leave EVCC in the care
Of Eva — a godsend, a friend.
This 38-bed facility remains
Warmly set to house seniors
In need of comfort, and of love.

What is a legacy?
I may not know what defines it.
But in my book — twenty years and more
Of owning and tending this home —
Is my legacy to the senior community.

Hello Everyone!Come & See the latest makeover at EVCC. Congratulations to Eva and staff.

INDEPENDENCE DAY – WE CELEBRATE
Just for Today – A Poem to Celebrate

Every 4th of July, the nation celebrates Independence,
But I challenge our group to honor Interdependence.
For we’ve built a unique reliance
On each other, with purpose and in meaningful silence.

Interdependence, forged through the years,
Through reunions, meetings, and heartfelt greetings,
It leaves indelible marks of joy on our faces,
Whenever we meet or when our connection embraces.

So celebrate with the nation, its independence,
And with us, celebrate our lived interdependence.
Not just today, but each time you recall
The special links that connect us all.

(Thank God for our friendship and His guiding ways,
That keep our interdependence an echo of His love, always.)

"Measure your aid, by the depth of our needs." This is my favorite line from a song sung during the Wednesday and weekly novena to our Mother of Perpetual Help at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Concord, CA. At St. John Vianney Church in Walnut Creek, there is a Bilingual Mass - bimonthly - with few Filipinos showing up to sing.- English and Tagalog songs. Today, Oct. 23, is another Bilingual Mass at SJV. "Our Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for us."

“Stay Connected” was my spontaneous answer when a choir member asked me how I kept myself active. On my way home, I thought about my answer and then I thought about you all ChE/Chem who have connected with me over the years. Thank you. You have kept me “active” and you have inspired me to keep “active and going”. You have been a blessing to us all. Daghang Salamat.

Originally messaged to USC ChE/Chem Alumni friends but is very true to all whom I know, Connecting with you all has been a blessing to me. Thank you.

Do Squirrels Think like us?
(Poem Series - 2024)
Peering from a rec-room sliding glass door
Saw an animal in an unusual position
Lying on his stomach, looked like a squirrel?
Stretched from head to tail, an unusual sight.
Been used to watching from my window,
Squirrels darting from tree to tree,
Running along the top of the fence.
An immobile squirrel? not once have I seen.
Left the rec-room for a cup of coffee
Came back half an hour after to see.
There lies the squirrel, in the same position.
Is he dead? Couldn’t think otherwise.
Thoughts of disposing a dead squirrel
From my yard was something I dreaded.
Suddenly I realized that he was looking
At a garden decorative – sculptured squirrel.
I came near, and to my surprise, he ran
Towards the nearby bush, then disappeared.
Left me wondering if he was surprised to see
His replica, of different shade or make?
Introspection! Do we humans do the same?
Gazing or observing people not commonly seen?
Did the squirrel believe a squirrel was in front of him?
Did he remain still to be ready for an encounter?
I don’t have the answers, but Ah! People!
We are no different or at least in this case.
We too watched people and make judgments
We too wait for the first move before making friends.
Can squirrels think like us?
I started with this question
I don’t have the answer nor expertise
But at the very least, I started a conversation.

That Wheel Turned?
(first published 2022, revised for 2024)

Played lately the “Wheel of Names”?
Well unknowingly that’s also life’s game.
Pondering on how things happened?
After eight decades of living.

Remembering how a college course
Turned your life’s path or direction’
Remembering the fears and uncertainties
After graduation: faced life’s realities.

After a quarter century away on retirement
The wheel turned to be with ChE-s in action
Even contributing and sharing ones experience
To colleagues and to the younger generation.

Where will be the next stop of the wheel?
You only pass this once, said the rule
Better yet, let your passing be a good kind
So at every wheel’s turn, you will win.

Life has its own way of playing
Turning the wheels of place and time
Turning the wheels of names of friends
Today is the right time: to cherish a friend.
