Bring your curiosity and join us for an evening of discovery and cosmic wonder the next two Saturdays at WNC’s Jack C. Davis Observatory (JCDO)!
A general Star Party is set for 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 15. Visitors learn how to use telescopes, volunteers share information about the universe and current astronomy topics are explored.
On Nov. 22 Star Party focuses on inclusion with the debut of a new tactile panel featuring the planet Uranus, captured by the James Webb Space Telescope and provided by the Space Telescope Science Institute. The 12x12 tactile panel allows visitors — especially those with visual impairments — to experience the wonders of space through touch.
Uranus will be at opposition that evening as well, making the distant ice giant appear its brightest and largest in the night sky. JCDO Director Dr. Thomas Herring will lecture on Uranus, offering insight into the seventh planet from the Sun — a gaseous, cyan-colored ice giant that continues to fascinate astronomers.
Both Star Parties are free of charge and begin at 6:30 p.m.
Star Parties are scheduled twice a month on Saturday nights at JCDO, which is located at 2269 Vanpatten Ave., on the northern end of WNC’s Carson City campus.
Don't miss an opportunity to learn more about the cosmos!

This afternoon, students, faculty and staff joined WNC Political Science and History Professor Dr. John A. Duerk for a thought-provoking presentation: “Practicing Civility in Trying Times: How can we learn from those we disagree with?”
Sponsored by the All In Campus Democracy Challenge and the Culture of the Campus Committee, the session explored why we form groups, how polarization grows, and what we can do to bridge divides.
Dr. Duerk encouraged attendees to:
• Take “winning” off the table and prioritize relationships
• Listen passionately
• Consider historical, social and cultural context
• Stay open to new information and personal growth
He closed with a reminder that diverse ideas aren’t a threat — they’re essential to learning.
Big thanks to everyone in attendance!

This your generosity can change a student’s life.

At Western Nevada College, many students are balancing more than textbooks and exams — some are working full-time jobs, supporting families or worrying about their next meal. Your gift helps ensure that education remains within reach for every student, no matter their circumstances.

Support the WNC Food Pantry — A growing number of students rely on our campus food pantry to stay focused and fed. Your donation helps keep shelves stocked with meals, snacks, hygiene products, and hope.

No amount is too small. Every dollar helps a student stay in school, feel supported and achieve their goals.

💙 Join the movement. Spread kindness. Invest in Nevada’s future.

Depending on cloud cover and where you are tonight, Aurora Borealis may provide some spectacular views to the north.
Jack C. Davis Observatory Director Dr. Thomas Herring reported that the observatory’s all-sky camera picked up a red glowing Aurora Borealis through the clouds at 9:13 last night.
Last May, Northern Nevada was treated to a breathtaking display of vibrant hues of green and pink during a powerful geomagnetic storm.
Dr. Herring said it’s difficult to predict bright northern lights, but he’s expecting tonight to present a better opportunity for area residents to see them after dark with their naked eyes.

🏗️💙 Building Skills. Building Community.
Western Nevada College Construction students recently put their skills to work — building a custom storage shed that has been donated by the college to Healing Arenas in Gardnerville! 🐴
The shed will be used to store tack for Healing Arenas’ programs, including the retraining of retired racehorses through the Stable Vets Project.
👏 Huge thanks to Professor Nigel Harrison and his students for their craftsmanship and compassion — and to Healing Arenas for making a difference in our region every day.
