Last week, our Public Health Educator II joined partner agencies across Moore County and surrounding areas to become a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician! We’re incredibly proud of all of their hard work and excited to officially offer hands‑on support to families when it comes to car seats and child passenger safety. Keeping our youngest residents safe is a community effort, and we’re thrilled to be a part of this work!

🍓🥑Healthy Families Start with WIC 🥕🍅

As more families face rising food costs, programs like the Moore County WIC Program are helping ensure children get the healthy start they need. WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) supports low-income families by providing nutrition assistance to pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age five.

“Good nutrition during pregnancy and early childhood sets the foundation for lifelong health,” said Moore County WIC Director Edwina Rich. “WIC provides families with support that give children a strong start.”

Designed to promote healthy beginnings, WIC offers a range of services to help families meet their nutritional needs and access care. Key services include:

•Nutrition education and personalized counseling to support healthy growth and development
•Breastfeeding support, including guidance from trained staff
•Healthy food benefits to help families afford nutritious groceries
•Referrals to healthcare providers and community resources for additional support

WIC is available to pregnant, breastfeeding, or postpartum women (up to six months), as well as infants and children up to age five. Applicants must meet income guidelines and be identified as having a nutritional risk. Families participating in Medicaid, SNAP, or Work First automatically meet income eligibility requirements.
Services are provided through the Moore County Health Department, located at 705 Pinehurst Avenue in Carthage. For more information or to apply, call 910-947-3271 or visit moorecountync.gov/WIC

Severe weather is expected to move through our area, as Monday progresses. Be sure to stay weather-aware, review your safety plan, and keep an eye on updates throughout the day. Conditions can change quickly during severe weather events.

Stay safe, Moore County!

⛈️ Severe Weather Update: The Severe Weather risk for Monday is increasing across a portion of the state. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a rare level 4/5 (Moderate Risk) for severe weather for most of Central North Carolina into Southern Virginia due to the increasing risk of damaging winds and tornadoes. Most of the rest of Central and Eastern NC is under a level 3/5 risk, and the rest of the state is under a level 2/5 and 1/5 risk.

-👀WHAT: A very strong cold front, accompanied by very high upper-level winds (wind shear), will move through the state on Monday. As these ingredients come together, the risk of strong to severe storms will develop. There remains some uncertainty about how much CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) there will be on Monday. More sunshine on Monday morning into Monday afternoon would increase the risk of discrete thunderstorms, thereby increasing tornado risk. The risk of this appears to be increasing.

THREATS: The main threat is damaging straight-line winds from a line of storms that'll move west to east late Monday morning into the afternoon and evening. However, the tornado threat is there, especially in the level 3/5 and 4/5 risk. We will have to watch for discrete cells across Central and Eastern NC late morning into the afternoon for tornado risk.

😎 The Bottom Line: There is an Enhanced and Moderate (Level 3 of 5 and 4/5) risk for severe storms across Central and Eastern North Carolina this Monday as a potent cold front moves through. The primary threat will be damaging straight-line winds, though large hail and tornadoes are also possible. There is no reason to panic, but today would be a good idea to make sure your severe weather plans are in place. Watch out for scary hype going around. I’ll keep you updated, as I have for nearly a decade, with down-to-earth forecasts.

March is National Kidney Month—a time to educate our communities and raise awareness about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), often called a “silent killer.” Did you know:

*1 in 3 adults in the U.S. is at risk for kidney disease
*More than 90,000 people are currently on the kidney transplant waitlist, and 12 people die each day waiting
*1 in 7 U.S. adults has kidney disease and doesn’t know it

Kidney disease often goes unnoticed until it has progressed significantly, and by then, the damage is usually irreversible. Just as we keep track of our blood pressure and cholesterol, it’s important to know our kidney numbers, too.
Visiting your primary care provider for an annual kidney health check can help ensure your kidneys are functioning properly. When detected early, kidney disease can often be managed and its progression slowed or even stopped.

What to do now? Get screened. Watch your salt intake. Be mindful of your drink (please drink your water - limit soda, energy drinks, and alcohol). Stop using to***co products. Make sure you get some type of exercise in. Last but not least - get your sleep! Let's show our kidneys some love!

03/06/2026

March is both National Nutrition Month and National Social Work Month. At the Moore County Health Department, WIC Nutritionists and Care Managers collaborate closely to serve our community.
Together, they address essential needs such as access to nutritious food, stable housing, healthcare, and other critical resources that significantly impact overall well-being.

Through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), WIC Nutritionists provide families with nutrition education, healthy food benefits, breastfeeding guidance, and referrals to healthcare and community services.

Care Managers help individuals and families navigate housing resources, access public assistance, connect with community programs, and overcome barriers that affect daily life.
By working hand in hand, these professionals not only improve health outcomes but also empower residents to build stability and independence. They identify individuals and families who may benefit from additional support and ensure they are connected to the appropriate services.

This March, we celebrate the dedication, compassion, and commitment of these professionals who strengthen our community every day.
