Keep in mind that your baby's tummy is very small on the first day of life. On the first day of life, your baby only needs about 5 mL of milk per feeding, which is about the size of a teaspoon. It's important to not offer too much supplemental milk to your baby in this early window, so that their tummy isn't stretched out for future feedings - making it potentially difficult to keep your supply up to their needs.
Did you know that 1 in every 2 families struggle to afford enough diapers and that period products aren’t covered by most assistance programs?
This month we are proud to be hosting a drive for The Diaper Bank of North Carolina () to collect diapers, wipes, and period supplies for families in need.
Every donation makes a difference, so if you are able, please consider donating to our drive through the month of November.

If you are breastfeeding, it is important to know the signs of mastitis. Look for early signs of mastitis, which include localized breast pain, redness, and flu-like symptoms. Mastitis occurs when milk is trapped in the breast, otherwise known as milk stasis, where bacteria can grow, leading to an infection. If you notice any signs of mastitis, seek prompt medical attention. Early intervention can prevent the condition from worsening and may save you from needing antibiotics.
If you have a history of mastitis, there are things that you can do to help prevent it from recurring. Reach out for support during your breastfeeding journey today.

There is single “perfect” prenatal for everyone. Everyone has different diets, lifestyles, health concerns, and nutrient needs, so it is important to think about what the best choice is for you and your baby. Below some key things to look for in your prenatal to help guide your choice:
✔ Third-party testing: Supplements aren’t tightly regulated, so it’s important to choose a brand that has been independently tested for quality and purity.
✔ Comprehensive nutrients: Many prenatals skip important nutrients, especially if they only require one pill daily. Make sure your prenatal includes iodine, vitamin B12, choline, magnesium, selenium, vitamin D, and vitamin K2.
✔ Calcium or iron, but not both: While it may seem important to get both iron and calcium in your prenatal, we know that in reality these minerals compete for absorption. Therefore, it is best to take them separately instead of together.
✔ Bioavailable forms of vitamins: Vitamins and minerals have different forms and some are much easier for the body to utilize than others. Therefore, it is important to make sure that the forms in your prenatal are the best form possible.
✔ A form & pill count that you will take: The most important thing is that you take your prenatal consistently, so if you are not a fan of taking pills then you may benefit from a lower pill count, smaller pills, or a different form, such as a prenatal powder, altogether.
There are so many options for prenatals on the market, but it is important to know that they are not made equally and not all prenatals are going to offer the same benefits for you and your baby. When choosing your prenatal it is important to remember that there is no one perfect prenatal. Everyone has different diets, lifestyles, health concerns, and nutrient needs, so it is important to think about what the best choice is for you and your baby.
Have you noticed your milk supply drops at certain times of the month?
A lot of times when this first starts happening, parents will think their supply is permanently dropping and may even stop breastfeeding altogether or start to wean. However, this is often just due to your first ovulation or your first menstrual cycle. There are two hormones that play a role in menstruation: estrogen and progesterone. As your period draws near, the levels of these two hormones drop, which can lead to a dip in milk supply for some. You may also notice that your baby is fussier at the breast or that they desire to feed more frequently for a few days around your menstrual cycle.
But the good news this is almost always temporary! Check out newest blog "Why Your Milk Supply Drops Around Your Period (and How to Boost It)" for how to support your milk supply during your cycle at: www.milestonesnutrition.com/blog/supply-changes-during-period.

How long should your little one sit at the table?
Most children can handle about 5 minutes of sitting at the table for every year of life until they are about school age (~6 years old), which I would set the expectation at 30 minutes going forward. Therefore, if you have a 3 year old, I would expect them to be able to sit for about 15 minutes before needing to get.
Of course, there are a lot of things that cause this number to vary. Read our blog "How to Help Kids Stay Seated at Mealtime (Without Meltdowns)" to see how to help your little one sit at the table at: www.milestonesnutrition.com/blog/seated-at-mealtime.

Crying is absolutely a sign of hunger—but it’s often the last one. By the time your baby is crying, they may already be stressed or overly hungry, which can make it harder for them to latch or settle into a feeding. This is why you want to avoid waiting to breastfeed or offer a bottle until this point if possible and instead watch for those early signs that your baby wants to eat.
If your baby is crying, try calming them with skin-to-skin contact, gentle swaying or bouncing, or rhythmic shushing sounds for a few minutes before bringing them to the breast and attempting to feed. Once they’re calm, they’ll be more likely to latch well and feed more effectively.
