Starting our Sunday practice with the breath of Yoga.
Sutra 2.49
Yasmin sati shvasaprashvasayorgativicchedah prana ayamaha
That [firm posture] being acquired, the movement of inhalation and exhalation should be regulated. This is pranayama.
The first two words of this sutra aer important. Tasmin sati means that the practice of pranayama will be fruitful only after we have acquired some master of the first 3 limbs of Yoga. Mastery of yama settles our conscience and brings us into good relationships with others. Mastery of niymaa cultivates a spiritual mindset in us, directing our most vital energy toward internal growth.
Asana, the 3rd limb, teaches us stillness in the body. It allows us to master restlessness and be physically comfortable in our bodies, enabling us to sit quietly and for some time.
All of these practices move our bodies and minds out of mechanical, ego-driven living and into the more subtle realms of body, mind and spirit.
