Bone health often goes unnoticed—until it’s at risk. As women age, declining estrogen levels can weaken bones, increasing the likelihood of osteoporosis and fractures. At Cary OB/GYN in North Carolina, we help women protect bone health through preventive screenings, personalized care, and treatments such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) when appropriate.
A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a simple, noninvasive test that measures bone mineral density—the most accurate way to detect bone loss before symptoms appear. It’s quick, painless, and uses low-dose X-rays to measure the strength of your spine and hips.
Most women should get a DEXA scan by age 65—or earlier if you have risk factors such as early menopause, low body weight, family history of osteoporosis, or thyroid disorders.
After menopause, estrogen levels drop, accelerating bone loss. HRT can help slow or prevent this process, reducing fracture risk and easing menopausal symptoms.
