Are you at risk for colon cancer? Knowing the risk factors can help you take preventative action.

If you have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, certain genetic syndromes (like Lynch syndrome), are over 50 years old, are African American or Ashkenazi Jewish, have diabetes, or have significant lifestyle factors like obesity, you may be at higher risk for colon cancer.

The best course of action? Talk with your relatives about family history, talk with your doctor about your personal health and risk, and get screened. Preventive screenings, like colonoscopies, help detect cancer early, leading to better outcomes.

Do you have chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)? The common condition causes ongoing symptoms such as heartburn, chest discomfort, regurgitation, and irritation of the esophageal lining. For some patients, symptoms persist despite medication and lifestyle changes.

This is where the LINX Reflux Management System can provide much needed relief for patients. Now offered at Wyoming Surgical Associates, this procedure is a minimally invasive surgical option that places an implant designed to support the body’s natural reflux defense.

Colorectal cancer rates in younger adults are skyrocketing with a roughly 2% annual increase in cases since the 1990s. It is now the leading cause of cancer death for men under 50 and the second for women under 50. What's going on?

According to the American Cancer Society, lifestyle choices such as lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyles, long-term smoking and drinking, and an increased consumption of processed foods and red meat are factors in the increase in colorectal cancer.

The good news is that colorectal cancer is often preventable and treatable when found early. Screenings such as colonoscopies should begin at age 45 or earlier, depending on risk factors. Schedule your colonoscopy with our team today at https://bit.ly/4eRtUAC

Last month, WSA surgeon Dr. Morrison completed specialized training in a new anti-reflux surgery, the LINX® Reflux Management System. This procedure differs from traditional anti-reflux surgeries, as it does not alter the stomach's anatomy and is associated with shorter recovery times and the preservation of natural function for many patients.
