A medical condition doesn't have to define you.

StrongerLife can show you what's possible...regardless of that diagnosis.

We often get asked what kind of exercises we recommend and to be honest, that is kind of a loaded question. The best answer is to find something that you will stick to.
-
That being said we are a little biased and love CrossFit. The principles, movements and community are absolutely amazing. Many of the movements translate to activities that you do almost daily(look back at our posts for a great video that demonstrates these). One thing we find though is that some of the movements can be very intimidating.
-
For example let’s look at the burpee. Many people have not willingly been on the floor in years and are afraid to do so. Well, we want you to be able to do everything for yourself including getting safely down to the ground to pick up something and more important getting back up.
-
The best part about CrossFit is there are several modifications to start to work on these movements. Check out this video clip from our friends at StrongerLife. They have a class specifically designed for the over 55 population. You can see that not only do they have a great turnout but there are modifications for each individual based on their abilities.

WHEN IT COMES TO EXERCISE EVEN WITH MULTI-MORBIDITY...
MOVEMENT WINS ALMOST ALWAYS

62% of persons over 65 and 81% of people over 80 present with multi-morbidity

A new consensus statement released in BJSM this week take an extensive look at the use of physical activity to fight multi-morbidity and as a key intervention for chronic disease management.

This consensus statements reviewed the literature, talked with stakeholders and patients and performed a Delphi study coming up with 5 important statements:

•The benefits of physical activity FAR OUTWEIGH the risk!
•Serious adverse events are RARE but that's not how patients feel
•It's not as easy as just telling people to move more
•Everyone has their own starting point
•Give them the guideposts of when to stop and seek medical advice

We preach this a lot in MMOA - we all need to be on the movement team and encourage our clients.

They mentioned 8 issues that will need to extra care and attention from providers and REHABILITATION PROVIDERS can help with ALL OF THEM:
0.Musculoskeletal pain
0.Fatigue
0.Dysglycemia
0.Shortness of breath
0.Cardiac chest pain
0.Falls & Frailty
0.Palpitations
0.Cognitive impairment

Go check out the study to learn more about their recommendations for each symptom/syndrome.

Thanks for the reminder BMH "Fitness For Life"

Routine......

What if you adapted a routine that benefitted your lifestyle? Our motto is “Fitness for Life”. That means longevity, sustainability and no quick fixes or fast sometimes unsustainable goals.

Some of us routinely grab coffee everyday.

Some routinely grab a soda with lunch or dinner.

Some routinely grab a fruity refresher or some sort of sugary drink.

We routinely tell ourselves 6 hours is enough sleep.

We routinely sit on our couches for tv time, look at the clock and it’s been 3 hours or more.

We are creatures of habit. We love routine!!

But what if we switched our unhealthy routines, one at a time, to adapt a healthier sustainable routine?

Focus on.....

—“The little wins”, we call them—

🔔We challenge you to make a little win everyday for the rest of the month.

Little wins:
8 hours of sleep rather than 6

Water or tea instead of soda, sugary drinks or coffee

Try to get to the gym or exercise a little

More fruit
Less chips

No cookies, candy, or cakes.

As far as exercise? If you can’t make it to the gym, clean your yard, play with the kids, clean a room, If you don’t know what we mean, we have 3 kiddos sharing a bathroom and cleaning that regularly is definitely enough to make you sweat.

See if you can make healthy decisions as routine as going to the restroom and when the month is over....re-evaluate.
How do you feel now?!

My guess is you won’t be disappointed!

Strength training is an essential “vitamin” for life. This means lifting is something we should be doing no matter our age. Unfortunately many are told lifting past a certain age is dangerous - this couldn’t be further from the truth. While we all start at different places in our strength journey & bring different injury histories into the mix - lifting is for everyone.
Think about this also: lifting is preparing you for LIFE. While many of us love the competition side of lifting, we must also realize that the strength we gain in the gym allows us to do things during our day to day lives with greater ease. Getting up & out of a chair, waking up stairs, picking up a box in your garage ALL become easier with greater strength.
There have been numerous studies and articles written on how muscle loss and weakness is positively correlated with death and a shorter life span. Lifting with movements like the squat, deadlift, press etc, when performed correctly and with good programming, will improve core strength, increase muscle mass/power/strength, increase your resiliency to injuries and improve your life expectancy.
Tell me about your strength journey in the comments below. Will you be lifting when you’re 70,80,90+??
