Just a little reminder for our RBTs 💕
What you do every day matters. The small wins are big wins. The effort you put in shows up in ways you might not always see, but it’s there.
Take care of yourself, keep learning, and know that every session counts.
You are valued, and we’re really grateful for you 💖

To the parent who just heard the word “autism” in a doctor’s office…

You’re going to Google way too much.
You’re going to read posts that scare you and posts that feel nothing like your life.
You’ll probably wonder at some point if you did something wrong.

You didn’t.

Some days will feel heavy and unfair.
Some days you’ll look at your child and think, “no one on this planet is funnier than you.”
You’ll learn a new language. Not just acronyms and therapies, but the way your child communicates in their own way.

You’ll read two completely opposite takes on almost everything in the autism world and start questioning yourself.
You might get attacked on social media just for daring to share your fears or your reality.
People will have opinions about your parenting, your child, and your words.
Remember: they don’t know your child like you do. You’re allowed to learn out loud.

You’ll grieve things you thought your life would look like.
You’ll also gain things people around you will never fully understand.
A new kind of patience. A louder kind of love.
A completely different definition of “progress.”

You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to enjoy every moment.
You just have to keep going, ask for help when you can, and remember that your child is not a tragedy.

They’re your kid.
Autism is part of who they are.
And it’s okay if you’re still figuring out how you feel about all of it.

You’re not behind.
You’re just at the beginning. 💙

“It’s only a disability if you make it one.”

COME. ON.

If it were that easy, trust me, parents wouldn’t be fighting for services, insurance coverage, AAC devices, or safety plans.

A disability is a disability because it impacts daily life. Because a child can’t communicate.
Because they have no sense of danger. Because they engage in pica, aggression, self-injury. Because they need 1:1 support to stay safe.

None of that appears because a parent “made it a disability.” It appears because it is one. 🤦🏻‍♀️

And telling me to “ask my ASD children how they feel” is wild when one of my children can’t answer the question. That’s the whole point.

Acting like disability disappears if you just think positive is insane.

Come on. We need to do better than this. This isn’t advocacy.

Imagine something hurts. But you can’t tell anyone.

You want too. You try even. But it comes out in different ways.

Ways that people don’t understand.

You try to get attention. But they won’t listen.

You scream. You hit your head. Because people notice that.

The screaming makes people frustrated. The hitting makes people stare.

You drop to the ground because you are exhausted. You roll. You try to get the pain out of your head by pressing your ear to the cold, cool ground.

People stare more. They snicker.

Mommy says the floor is dirty. Get up. When you don’t move, she joins you on the floor. She lies with you in the lobby. Both your faces pressed to the ground. Smiling. Giggling at the train whistles coming from her phone.

Later you overhear her tell dad that she deflected every mean look. But it still hurt to see them judging.

People ask you if something hurts. You just stare. You don’t know how to respond.

And you can’t point to it either. Because pointing is hard. It’s confusing sometimes.

It’s hard to sleep because of the pain. Eating is hard too.

Some people say, oh, that’s just autism.

But it’s not. You know that. Your mom knows that too.

But no one listens.

Your mom makes phone calls. She leaves messages. She makes appointments.

You hear her say, ‘you have to help him.’ Sometimes she gets mad. She jokes that she’s going crazy.

She brings you to doctors. Sometimes they listen. Sometimes they don’t.

You don’t like going to the doctor. It’s scary.

The people try and touch you. Take your temperature. Listen to your heart. You don’t like to be touched. It’s scary.

Waiting is hard. And there is so much sitting. And shushing. You are supposed to stay in a room. The room smells funny and the lights are really bright.

So you turn them off. Then on. Then off. Then on.

You can tell that your mom is exhausted. She is sweating.

But you are too. And you don’t act sick. Instead you are laughing. And running.

Mom is trying to help. But it’s not working. She’s explaining that you show pain in other ways. But they don’t seem to be listening.

So you get louder.

It seems that no one will listen to either of you.

It’s not just autism. It’s pain.

If I had the power to change one thing about my son’s life...I would give him the ability to communicate pain.

It’s that simple. That’s all I need. To know when he is hurting.

And to be able to help him. To make it alright.

Thank you for following our life alongside nonverbal autism and learning with us.

Reinforcement gets a bad reputation but it’s not about bribes or robotic compliance.
It’s about understanding what actually increases behavior and using connection, care, and intention to support growth.

If a behavior is increasing, something is reinforcing it.
The real work is noticing what and why then teaching skills so support can fade naturally over time.
