COVID-19 variant found in Minnesota

The new variant strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus first detected in the United Kingdom was identified by genomic sequencing in positive specimens from five residents of four different counties in the Twin Cities metro area. Four of the cases were identified through the MDH Public Health Laboratory, and one was identified through CDC.

Early indications are that the new variants may spread more easily, but there is no sign yet that they are any different in terms of how sick people can get and how they affect any particular person. The variant strain had been found in other states in the U.S., so we were expecting to find the virus in Minnesota. Knowing that it is now here does not change our current public health recommendations. Continue to take steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is important to wear a mask, stay 6 feet from others, avoid gatherings, wash your hands often, and stay home if you feel sick or have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19.

COVID-19 vaccine update

Minnesota is aware of media reports from yesterday (Jan. 12) that the federal government has changed their guidance on vaccine distribution to include people 65 and older and those 18-64 with underlying conditions that make them more susceptible to complications from COVID-19. We are waiting for more details and guidelines from the federal government on these reports.

At this point no additional vaccine doses have been made available for Minnesota. Until there are more details about how much vaccine Minnesota will receive and when it will arrive, the State continues to distribute the extremely limited vaccine supply allocated each week. Our focus continues to be immunizing for impact – targeting those most at risk of contracting COVID-19 and those most at risks of serious complications if they get it.

If the vaccine supply increases in the near term, we are ready for it. We have been planning for vaccines to be more broadly available for months. The next group most likely will include people whose age puts them at higher risk for serious health complications if they contract COVID-19. The changes we’ve heard about from the federal government are consistent with our thinking and planning.

As we learn more, we will work to make sure everyone who is eligible for a vaccine knows how, where, and when they can get their shots. Everyone’s opportunity to get vaccinated will come; it will just take some time.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Because of COVID-19, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving and any other holiday is at home with only the people who live with you, and no one else. Saturday, Nov. 21 through Friday, Dec. 18, Executive Order 20-99 requires all Minnesotans to:

Limit social gatherings to one household.
Not gather outside of your household.
Postpone all celebrations, events, receptions, and parties, including any social gatherings for weddings and funerals.
It is especially important this year to find safer ways to celebrate the holidays and help stop the spread of COVID-19. While in-person celebrations are limited to one household, there are still ways to celebrate virtually with your loved ones. Help keep friends and family safe by choosing lower-risk activities: Safer Holiday Celebrations during COVID-19.

4-week pause to slow the spread

November 19, 2020

Yesterday, Governor Walz announced Executive Order 20-99, which dials back certain activities to slow the spread of COVID-19. Dial Back, Minnesota is a four-week pause of most social activities, in-person dining, sports, and indoor fitness activity in group settings. While some businesses can continue to offer goods and services in a safe manner, many others will again have to weather the challenge of adjusting their operations to “to-go” or virtual means.

Starting Nov. 20 at 11:59 p.m. to Dec. 18 at 11:59 p.m.:

No indoor or outdoor dining at restaurants and bars.
Up to five customers at a time may be inside the establishment to pick up takeout and delivery orders.
Organized sports for youth and adults are not allowed.
Gyms, fitness and yoga studios, martial arts, and dance studios will be closed.
All indoor facilities at outdoor recreation sites will also be closed.
Public pools and rec centers will be closed.
Indoor entertainment venues will be closed.
Receptions, celebrations, and private parties must be canceled or postponed.
Weddings, funerals, and other similar planned ceremonies can be held with the current rules in place, but all receptions and gatherings connected to these ceremonies must be canceled or postponed.
Do not gather with people from other households.
No indoor or outdoor gatherings, except with immediate household members.
No person from outside your immediate household should enter your home.
This is a time to look out for one another. Shop local, get carry out, and buy online gift cards locally. These temporary changes will help to reduce the number of infections while safely supporting our schools, hospitals, and economy. For more information and guidance, visit Stay Safe MN.

Minnesota News and Outreach

Today, we reported the highest daily number of new COVID-19 cases in Minnesota to date. COVID-19 is spreading in every community at an all-time high. It is not just big events that cause this incredibly high level of community spread. These types of scenarios are also driving the spread: happy hours with a few friends, brunch with family members who live in other households, gatherings in your backyard, weddings and other ceremonies, etc.

People get exposed to COVID-19 when they are out and about from people who don't know they have it. This silent spread gets into our schools, long-term care facilities, and hospitals. If our health professionals and other critical workers can't avoid the virus outside of work, then they can't be at work taking care of people or providing essential services.

The good news is that we can do something about this. We all need to be asking ourselves what we are going to do to change our behavior today to slow the spread of COVID-19. Do your part to keep hospital beds available, keep doctors and nurses on the job, and keep schools open: wear a mask, wash your hands often, stay 6 feet from others, avoid large gatherings, get tested, and always stay home if you are sick.

COVID-19 Testing
Testing doesn’t cause cases of COVID-19, it shows us what is actually happening. It also lets someone know if they have COVID-19 so they can take steps to protect their loved ones and their communities. That’s why expanding access to testing is so important.

For more information on when to get tested, types of tests available, and current testing locations, visit Symptoms and Testing: COVID-19.
