"Men are disturbed not by events, but by the views which they take of them." - Epictetus

So, how are you going to view the world today?

As I am getting ready to enjoy Thanksgiving with some family members. I want to make sure we all are thankful of all the first responders that are away from their families. Ready to come to our aid at the drop of a hat for any needs we may have. I am truely grateful for your service. Happy Thanksgiving to all my brothers and sisters in service.

Some times we forget to serve the ones that love us. By this I mean serving our love ones at home as much as we serve the community at work. They love and support us; we need to make sure we do the same. We need to love them as Christ loved the church. He did this selflessly and sacrificial loving way. Remember to keep doing the job we are doing we need to have a strong support home base. To keep that base strong, we need to fulfill their needs. So, I challenge you to fine one way to show your love and thanks to your family today.

Short Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me to be as intentional and focused on being a godly spouse as I am at being a first responder. Help me to remember the human side of my spouse and that they are not my enemy. Amen.

Ephesians: 5:25:
For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her.

One of the hardest things to do as a first responder is to turn off our on-duty persona. When we are home, we need to be there for our family. Our spouses and children deserve to have the true off duty loved one with them. They depend on us to speak easy to them. To help them grow in a positive way and to be their foundation. Sometimes we find it hard to turn off the tough exterior and allow our loved ones to see the true loving personality. They make enough sacrifices for our career and need to serve. We owe them the time to have us attended to them. There is enough darkness in the world for us to see, we need to open ourselves up to the light at home. We need it as much as they do.

Short Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me be conscious of my words and the way I speak to my family. Amen.

1 Thessalonians 5:11:
So, encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

I just want to put this out there, with the lost of one of our fellow brothers from KCSD. I am always here to talk and help out through these times. We all feel the tragic loss of a family member whether it was our department or not. Also remember these tragedies trigger the memories of pass loss and traumas. Please feel free to call me any time, (269)716-2209.

Service of our community is what brings us to work as a first responder in the first place. We have a since of duty and want to serve others. This is part of our core make up as a person. It is what drives us to answer every call and do the best we can on every scene. One of the things we need to remember is we also serve the community in the way we interact with them, not just the way we do our jobs on an emergency scene. It is the everyday interactions the majority of our community sees. They may never call on us in an emergency, but they do see the way we interact with them and others as we carry out our daily jobs. This is important, for with out a community to serve, there would be no need for first responders. There would also be no funding for departments. We must strive every day to represent the department the best we can, even on our worst days. Remember Jesus wants us to serve others in the same way we would serve him, in honor of him.

Short Prayer, Heavenly Father, our strength comes from you alone. Our influence lies in numbers, spanning across our agency and community. Show me the path and value of relationship building. Amen.

Psalm 8:2: Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

Mistakes, we all make them, but when you are in a career that everyone is waiting for you to make one then broad cast it across the news and social media. It can be very humiliating and devastating. As first responders we train so much and try to think of every possible senior. The truth is there is going to come a time when you make a mistake. What sets the professional first responder different from the average is the ability to except responsibility and be humble. When you make a mistake own up to it and learn from it. Every mistake is a chance to learn a new tactic or develop a new standard. People outside the realm of first responders are going to ignorantly make a big deal and shine a light on everything. Most of the time it is to take the blame off of the individual that is rightfully to blame. Remember if you trust God, he will deliver even when we make a mistake.
Short Prayer: Heavenly Father, even in my mistakes, may your name to be glorified. Give me strength of character to own up to my mistakes, even when it is difficult to do. Amen.

2 Corinthians 12:10: That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delighted in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

As a first responder we know the importance of getting done right the first time. So, it is important to slow things down at times. Make sure we are getting all the information. Looking at everything at the scene. I remember an instructor always telling me a good scene size up determines the difference between success and failure. I understand that taking the extra couple of minutes to gather all the information may seem like a life time in a critical situation, but its better than having to take the extra time to go back and fix mistakes.
Slowing down and waiting can be hard, but remember all good things come in due time. God has the ultimate plan. He knows when things need to be done and will get you what you need at the right time, trust his timing.
Remember Slow is smooth and smooth is good.

Short Prayer: Heavenly Father, I submit to waiting on you. I will be encouraged by your promises, your Word, and the strength you provide. Amen.

Psalm 27:14: Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
